I have a friend, and we are having a disagreement.

The sacraments of holy orders and matrimony- I know one can be married and then become a priest, however, can one become a priest, then get married? In any rites?

Thank much!!!

And still remain a priest in clerical standing? No I don’t know of any Rite or Canonical Church that allows that?

I supposed technically, the Pope may dispense the impediment that Orders has to marriage.

But I don’t know of a single case where the Pope has dispensed without laicizing the priest as well.

No, no theoretically. Absolutely totally theoretically- I don’t think that would EVER happen, but COULD it? LOL

oh, and the reason is he says one cannot be married after recieving holy orders- the sacament won’t make an indelible (sorry, I don’t know how to spell it atm) mark. I would think one could.

He has a paper I am proofing for him, and this is discussed on it. I may very well be wrong, but can’t find much either way, so I thought I’d ask here 🙂

This is what is so ironic about the married priests debate. If it was decided to once again allow married priests, all those currently Ordained, would not be included. Marriage is not an impediment to Ordination and never has been. However, since the early days in the church, Ordination is always an impediment to marriage. We have married convert priests, that were from the Anglican or other denominations, but they were married before being Ordained into the Roman Catholic priesthood. Ordination is also an impediment to the marriage of a permanent deacon. Our bishop had made it clear that we will not be allowed to re-marry if our wife leaves this earth before we do.

God bless,
Deacon Tony
