Hi Everyone,

I will be teaching on the topic of dying to personal agendas and letting God set the agenda for one’s life.

I faintly recall a story of a certain ritual, perhaps taking place at a critical stage of priestly formation. It involved the candidate lying on the altar and being covered with a white sheet (pall?). This may have been a symbolic indication of the candidate’s death to fleshly agendas and his committment to live only unto God.

Does anyone know of this ritual, who practiced it, and whether it is still carried out?

Thank you,
Norm Turner, Toronto

distracted:
i think the thing about being prostrate in front of the altar is still practiced but not at all ordinations?
It sounds like a great ritual, though.

Prostration is part of the ceremony, though not the Sacrament, of Holy Orders. It should still be practised at all diaconal, priestly & episcopal ordinations. The covering with the pall I have never seen, though it sounds good!
