Holy See urges ‘prudence’ in reading Vatican-related cables

(CNN)– By Tim Lister: The Holy See’s press office Saturday urged the public to read the latest Vatican-related diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks with “great prudence,” claiming the allegations cited in the documents reflect only the view of their writers. Without going into specifics on a number of allegations that emerged with the U.S. cables, the Holy See Press Office said that the reports “reflect the perceptions and opinions of the people who wrote them and cannot be considered as expressions of the Holy See itself.”

My hope for Wikileaks is that it will begin to force governments and organizations to act and think with “prudence” in the first place. Want a vaccine that’s 100% effective against scandal? Do the right thing. If you do that, you’ll never need “damage control” when the truth comes out, as it inevitably will.

Right and I’m sure non-organized peoples and religions are free from such corruption.

This seems exactly the view taken by Russia, that these cables represent the fallible opinions of their authors… Now Russia to promoting the idea that Assange, the man responsible for these cables coming out, should get the Nobel Peace Prize. But some of the cables spoken very insultingly about Russia. Why isn’t Russia angry at Assange? Because Russia realizes that these insulting remarks in the cables come from U.S. officials, who sometimes would not know what they are talking about.
Personally, I would be quite interested in learning what the cables say about the Vatican–but at the same time I will be a bit skeptical about what is said.

Considering that some of the US diplomats at the Vatican were surprised that Benedict was elected pope, the Vatican’s urge for prudence seems pretty reasonable. If diplomats can be wrong and surprised in a place like the Vatican, I would imagine it would be the same with most countries and it would be silly to take these cables for anything more than opinions for people who may or may not know what they are talking about.

Not at all. Governments and corporations are rotten to the core with corruption or sleazy behavior. That is why they are the focus of Wikileaks’ work. The cables referred to here, I believe, have more to do with the Vatican’s actions as a government entity rather than a church per se. Most of Wikileaks focus is on secular institutions because they are the ones who hold the most power over us these days, and where abuse of that power does the most harm.

But I stand by my core point: the single most effective PR you can ever have is simply not to do things that are sleazy or perceived as sleazy. Carry out your life, as much as possible, as if everything you do is in the public record, and you’ll never have to issue nervous press releases to try to spin or do damage control.

I think that the message behind all of the scandals involving the Vatican and our clergy in general is that our focus must be on Jesus and not the institutional church. The Catholic Church as an institution is full of sinners, as we all are. However, with their special place in the Church comes a special and greater responsibility. Too many people in the Church, both clergy and laity, have turned a blind eye to serious matters for too long. It’s time for our leaders to be the true shepherds that they were ordained to be and for the laity to demand it from them.
