How am I to understand the term “Holy See”…
I understand the term “Sea” as a noun but not “See”
Does that mean Holy “Vision”…?
It just strikes me as a very curious term that’s all.
My curiosity gets the best of me sometimes, that’s all… 🤷

Ummm… I think I posted this in the wrong section… sorry. You could move it to the right one if you need to. I probably should have posted this in your “Apologetics” section where you allow questions 🤷

You’re allowed to post questions anywhere in the forums. 🙂

‘See’ comes from ‘sede’, Latin word for ‘seat’, so the ‘Holy See’ is the seat of power of the Pope - in other words the Vatican. A bit like the word ‘cathedral’ comes from ‘cathedra’, meaning ‘chair’ (as in ‘ex cathedra’).

Both terms express basically the same idea - which is imagery Our Lord also uses in scripture, saying that the scribes and pharisees have authority because they ‘sit in the seat of Moses’.

And each bishopric is also called a ‘see’, and every bishop also has his ‘cathedra’ or seat of power, in a particular church of his diocese, called the ‘cathedral’.

Thus endeth the lesson 🤓

Okay… That’s an interesting etimology, thanx…!
I never would have figured that out.
