My wife and I were looking for a resource to help improve the communication in our marriage. We aren’t having any problems, but we know that we want to dive deeper in our faith and marriage. The book Holy Sex was recommended to us, and it seems like a good resource, but I was wondering if anyone here had a good/bad experience using it.

I felt it was a very good overview of the goodness of sex in marriage. It isn’t very “deep” on theology or “practical mechanics,” but not everybody wants or needs that.

If you aren’t looking for a book particularly about sex, his For Better, Forever! is more general marriage advice. Also The Exceptional Seven Percent, which is not Catholic focused but would apply.

I read it years ago and I really recommend it for people who struggle with the Church’s teachings on marriage and sexuality. I think it explains it really well, clearly, and in a positive way. However, unless that’s a problem for you, I don’t think it’s really designed to help your marriage. So, I guess I recommend the book, but not for what you are describing.

I’ve read Popcak’s stuff years ago, but not much really stuck with me.

I would suggest the following books, which aren’t Catholic, but will help:

–The Five Love Languages
–The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work
–Boundaries in Marriage

👍

Love is Never Enough by Aaron T. Beck is also a good book from a secular perspective.

These three have been helpful for me:

Love and Responsibility by Karol Wojtyla (Saint John Paul II)
Life Giving Love by Kimberly Hahn
Good News about Sex and Marriage by Christopher West (although I can’t remember if this one has anything I didn’t agree with… but I do remember that I did like it better than Holy Sex)

Oooh, and the Catechism… that is helpful as well 🙂
