Catholic Bishops plan a politically correct travesty of the Mass for ‘Youth Sunday’
Posted By: Damian Thompson at Oct 15, 2008 at 14:43:22

The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales are planning a “Youth Sunday” next month which is so politically correct, patronising and biased to the Left that it is beyond satire. It is also beyond Catholicism, playing barbarous tricks with the liturgy that break the Church’s rules governing the celebration of Mass.

Among the highlights:

• A “litany of penance” that asks God’s forgiveness “For over-filling our kettles” and “For wasting paper”

• A prayer “that the tyranny of profit be quelled”

• The distribution at Mass of Fairtrade chocolates wrapped in paper carrying an exhortation to switch to energy-saving lightbulbs

• Persuading the priest to wear a chasuble stitched together from recycled material

See what I mean about being beyond satire? “Youth Sunday”, on 23 November, is devised by environmental ideologues and climate-change activists well to the Left of the political spectrum - but funded, needless to say, by ordinary churchgoers. Most Catholics in their teens and twenties are sick to the back teeth of this sort of drivel, but I’d be surprised if many of the Church employees running this stunt were actually young.

But the real scandal is what Youth Sunday plans to do to the celebration of Mass, which is to turn it into a propaganda exercise punctuated by comedy turns. It suggests following the Gospel reading, about the Last Judgment, with a sketch about sheep and goats. Let me quote from the author of the document on the Bishops’ website. (Hat tip to James Preece, who has some powerful things to say about this travesty here.)

I couldn’t possibly reproduce the whole sketch here, so I’ve simply taken the parts with my favourite puns - it is puntastic and you know how I like my puns.

News Reporter: This is the Good News. The headlines at six o’clock. Bong! Feeling sheepish? It’s eternal life for the nation’s favourite animal. Bong! Get your goat up! Gruff news for selfish beasts. Bong! It’s the end of the world as we know it. Which side will you end up on?

Larry: Well, Sue, Jesus certainly wasn’t pulling the wool over our eyes. He didn’t mince his words; he told us quite clearly that we had to do good things for one another. They flocked to see him … The crowd were pretty divided really. I have to say that some of the goats looked a little sheepish, funnily enough.

Sue: I bet the goats didn’t like that.

Larry: No, Sue, they were baaa-rking mad. Especially when he told them they’d be for the chop

This is during the Mass for the Solemnity of Christ the King. And its performance is not just permitted by the Bishops of England and Wales: it is suggested by them. These are the same bishops who would not dream of suggesting a Mass using the ancient Latin liturgy of the Catholic Church - indeed, who do everything in their power to block its celebration.

One final touch. At the offertory, bread and wine are brought to the altar to be consecrated by the priest. But Youth Sunday doesn’t want to stop there. The organisers have some further suggestions for “gifts” to be presented at the altar. You can probably guess what they might be, but let me confirm your suspicions: “Energy saving lightbulbs, recycling containers, fairly traded goods…”

How about an extra gift of sick bags for the congregation? But I’m confident that any orthodox Catholics would have left the church by this stage.

While agree that Catholics should work toward better care for creation and the welfare of others, if you start messing with the Mass, you get on my bad list.

Sigh

This is totally off the wall. I hope that someone videos this “Mass” & sends the results to the Vatican.

Had you not provided a link to this newstory, I’d have written both you & your message off…with a "whoever posted this is either nuts or an anti-Catholic trying to provide material for Catholic-bashing. . After reading the complete article, I must agree with “Shepherd’s” comment:
This is the sort of event that calls for a rosary group to stand outside the church and pray - rather as is often done outside abortion clinics.

Yeah, well that just proves that the English are slowly loosing it.
That’s liberalism for ya. Soon Christians will be the minority in that country anyhow, and it will be run by Imams.
They don’t take Christianity seriously and that is becoming more and more obvious.

Dear Lisa, I have to concur with paperwight:
Excuse me?
Replace ‘the English’ with ‘the Americans’ and ‘Imams’ with ‘atheists’ in your sentence, and it would not incorrectly describe our own great Country.

please rescind your statements for the sake of courtesy.

I apologize for offending. I don’t mean to exclude Americans or any other nation, except that the article pertained to England. When someone posts a similar article about similar events in another nation I’ll make comments about it.

I love England, and I worry about it. I also love America and worry about it too.

Mostly I just love Christianity and worry about that the most.🙂

Yes, I would also say “Americans are losing it and atheists are taking over America”. So is liberalism taking over America and political correctness and relativism.🙂

Political correctness is such a huge problem that we can’t even discuss it or we are branded as “politically incorrect.” To illustrate how deep the infection is. It is almost beyond surgery.

Well, it seems to me that your first two points could legitimately be included in the Prayers of the Faithful, could they not? Distributing chocolate during Mass seems like a real bad idea. A lot of people would probably eat it right away. If it’s after Mass, what’s the problem? The recycled chasuble may be a problem, although I’m not sure that there are actually requirements for its composition. Let’s hope they can match colours and use the right one (white?). The skit is baaaaaad…I mean, not allowed during Mass. I’m not sure about what gifts are allowed to be brought forward, could you give a reference?

Why should we ask forgiveness for overfilling the kettle? Since when has such a minute (mi-nute) “waste” of electricity been a sin? Ditto for paper…

Why not ask for forgiveness of the complete disregard of Christian morality that is rampant in every western country now?

The only reference I have at hand is the one provided in the OP…

Lisa, if we follow your metaphor to its logical conclusion, your initial post is like euthenizing the body, rather than to excise the diseased organ.

You painted the entire British population in an unfair and unflattering light. Even the Lord told Abraham that he would spare the city if 10 righteous men were found. please reconsider your statements.

Absolutely we need to ask forgiveness for our society’s lack of morality! But why not look at the smaller things every now and then? Sins are deliberate acts, so overfilling the kettle wouldn’t qualify as a sin, but it could be a mistake, and mistakes can be forgiven.

Mate, I have no doubt you mean well, but why the dickens should an opportunity to ask for forgiveness for sins be wasted, and that opportunity be taken by asking forgiveness for something that needs no forgiveness?

How dare anyone question this wonderful display ! Why, these Bishops are well within their right, due to …
Collegiality

Yea Buddy

Why? Why not inject this idiocy into some media program instead of the Mass? I can’t believe anyone would do this. Why? For what purpose? Why not just not be Catholic? It just boggles my mind.

And it makes me cry. We are throwing away the Mass–the world’s greatest treasure–by mocking it like this.

She spoke her mind.I hope she does NOT reconsider her statements. She did not paint the entire British population in an unfair and unflattering light.Stop bullying her.She is entitled to speak freely.Stop trying to silence her.

British-bashing? Nah; I don’t think so.

I love the English & love England, just like I love American & Americans, but they have one sad thing in common, at this time, which is rampant secularization.

I would have to say England is worse. England is akin to Canada in this regard, where you can now literally get yourself arrested for stating Catholic doctrine. For reading the Catechism. It’s “hate speech.”

(Ironically, the only reason America is “better”, if it is, is due to all our Fundamentalist & Evangelical brothers, with their Creationism and Iraq war support along with their pro-life and pro-God sensibilities - it’s not due to us orthodox Catholics, who are quite a small minority.)

She spoke her mind.
she spoke her mind unfairly, rashly and bit imprudently
I hope she does NOT reconsider her statements
Hope away!
.She did not paint the entire British population in an unfair and unflattering light.
she did.
Stop bullying her.
I didn’t
She is entitled to speak freely.
as am I.
Stop trying to silence her.
I haven’t. I merely asked her to reconsider her statements. lighten up, soutane.
