Holy Spirit or Holy Spirits?

Our Bishop live streams Mass on Sundays. After the Mass, he prays the Hail Mary. I noticed today that every time he came to the “Glory Be” he said, “to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirits.” I’ve never heard Holy Spirit as Spirits before. I listened to make sure and he did say it each time. Any insight?

Are you sure he doesn’t just have a lisp or something?

There’s only one Holy Spirit. The Catholic Church refers to the “Holy Spirit” or “Holy Ghost” in the singular, never in the plural. If your priest is somehow saying “Spirits”, I doubt this is intentional.

I assume he’s talking about Revelation 4:5. We don’t fully understand God… we know that Christ speaks of the Holy Spirit… this is all that we need to concern ourselves with.

Just to add… we are to baptise in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. I reckon the seven spirits are the seven gifts of the Spirit.

Yes! do go and ask him directly, be charitable, possibly there was an artifact in the streaming and you heard spirits when the Bishop in fact said Spirit.
There is but ONE Holy Spirit who is GOD this is why we adore him as GOD.
If he does this every Sunday, perhaps it is important to let him know this is happening, so that he is aware of it and take appropriate measures, like enunciating the word more carefully to avoid confusion.
Peace!

That’s what I wondered, but I heard it each time. Since this is the Bishop, I figured I’d ask her first before I try to ask him - or his office. I’ll go back a week and listen to that live stream and see what he says. Thanks. Just listened to last week and he is definitely saying spirits - I’ll ask the Diocese.

Is he using a mic?
Maybe too close ?
See if there is another word ending in “t” or maybe “d” that suffers any sort of distortion.
Perhaps…

I just heard from the Diocese and they assured me he was saying Spirit. Like many have said, it’s probably a glitch with the mic, and “empty” Cathedral, etc. Blessings to all.

Believe me, I was not accusing him of anything or trying to find fault - but I wanted to make sure I had it right. Imagine being in a position where everything you do is taped, televised, watched and re-watched by hundreds - thousands. It is so easy to go on auto pilot (and I’m not saying this of him). I know with my own prayers, I’ve caught myself totally forgetting where I am. Blessings.

Yeah, the other night the Archbishop led a Rosary for vocations on livestream, and totally messed up the beginning. On the part where he was supposed to say 3 Hail Marys, he only said one and then went to the Glory Be. I figured he just had a lot on his plate, and it can be a little daunting to suddenly be doing everything on camera. I’m sure a lot of the other bishops are getting used to this too. Unless one does it every week like a Bishop Barron or an Archbishop Sheen, it’s a learned art.

The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Godhead. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are One God. The Holy Spirit is one person. Maybe the Bishop wasn’t understood clearly due to the fact that the Mass was streamed digitally.

God Bless and Mary keep you.
