Hey guys-
I have a baptist friend and we were talking about the Holy Spirit. She says that the bible says that unless you speak in tongues, which is the evidence, the Holy Spirit is not in you. She says that if the Spirit is in you it will manifest itself through tongues whether you want it to or not. It was hard to have a level-headed discussion with her as she kept going off on her tangents thinking that I was attacking her belief in Christ. Is this correct thinking? Can anyone clarify this for me?
Thank you. your brother in Christ Jesus.👋

She was probably referring to Mark 16:17-18:

He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

** **Jesus here describes certain miracles that would accompany those who believe the gospel. As we read the verses, the obvious question is, “Do these signs exist today?” We believe that these signs were intended primarily for the apostolic age, before the complete Bible was available in written form. Most of these signs are found in the Book of Acts.

The only places these signs were discussed were in the context of miracles done by the Apostles for this reason, and since the rule of the Bible is it all has to be taken in context as a whole, not a given phrase or verse pulled out of context to be construed, everything I have read says this was Apostolic era only.

Example:

Acts 19:11-12 - And God did extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them.

2 Corinthians 12:12 - The signs of a true apostle were performed among you in all patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works.

Hebrews 2:3-4 - how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard him, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his own will.

And St. Paul points out that there are different gifts but the same spirit. He makes it clear that no one should speak in tongues if there is no one to interperet. (1 Cor 12:1-11) The gift of tongues is just that, a gift. Not everyone will get that particular gift. To suggest that one is not saved because one did not receive that gift is to seriously misread Scripture.

I just talked with her again and she pointed out to me that when the Holy Spirit went into the apostles they spoke in tongues thus they were edified. So she says that is the only way you know that the Holy Spirit is in you, through tongues. Her bible, the KJV study edition, says that speaking in tongues is the initial evidence that the spirit is in you.
So i would appreciate any help clarifying this a bit more.
Thank you,
Christs blessings be upon you and your family:blessyou:

Where in the Bible does it say that the only way you know the Spirit is in you is if you speak in tongues? It certainly doesn’t say that in Mark 16:17-18. I certainly don’t see that in 1 Corinthians either. I have a New King James Version as well as the King James, both Protestant editions. Could you be more specific Chapter and verse where she says the Bible says that?

That said, I do believe that the gift of tongues is alive and well today.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are distibuted by the Lord to whom He wishes as outlined in 1 Corinth 12. God Bless

Also, how does this person know with infallible certainty that it is the Holy Spirit and not Satan using a trick to keep her out of Christ’s one, holy and apostolic Church?

1 Cor 13:8: If there are prophecies, they will be brought to nothing;** if tongues, they will cease**; if knowledge, it will be brought to nothing.

This quote occurs in Paul’s famous passage about love which never fails. But tongues will cease.

Do you know when Paul says that the tongues will cease? Have they already ceased? or Are they going to cease? Is there a time reference for this passage?

All I know is by what I see of her, and most of the time she is either singing praise songs or talking about Jesus.

But it does not say when they will cease. Since Fatima had prophetic visions, phophecy had not ceased.

Acts 2:4 New King James Version
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and beagn to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 2:4 King James Version
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

She is distorting Scripture. Acts 2:4 does not in any way say that the **only way **you know that the Holy Spirit is in you is through tongues.

Acts 2:4 says that the apostles spoke in tongues as the Holy Spirit gave them the ability to do so.

I am not saying she is not a Christian. But just like the Church in Corinth, there are Christians who have put undo emphasis on tongues.

In :bible1: 1Corinthians 12:4-11 Paul talks about how we are all given **different **gifts for the edification of the Church. and verse 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

If God wills the gift of tongues to a person, they will have it. But God is the one who wills it.

Your friend probably had to pray for the gift of tongues. God does answer prayer. But Paul does say if a person is going to pray for a gift, they should pray for the gift of interpretation, not tongues.

I hope this helps a little.

Your sister in Christ,
Maria

Greetings
You might point out to your friend, also, that according to the first Chapter of Luke, John the Baptist received the Holy Spirit while still in his mothers womb. There is not one indication in scripture that John the Baptist ever spoke in tongues. He had many wonderful and powerful gifts but it would seem, tongues were not one of them.
Are you sure your friend is a Baptist? As far as I know, most Baptists do not believe these gifts of the Holy Spirit are meant for us today.

Paul does not say when tongues will cease. He points out that love never fails, but prophecies will cease, tongues will cease, and that knowledge and prophesying are imperfect. The passage concerns the primacy of love over the other gifts. I wouldn’t consider Fatima to be covered under this passage, since it is a private revelation, not a prophecy.

My brother once attended a lengthy pentecostal service along with his then-girlfriend. Everybody spoke in tongues. Including him. “Nothing to it,” he said. “When everybody else is doing it, you just do the same thing.”
