That is so sad…I had no idea this ritual caused so much infighting. I’ve personally never perceived this as being an issue at all outside of CAF. When people get up in arms over this issue, I think the whole message of this beautiful practice is lost. Sometimes it’s good to remind ourselves of why it is done in the first place. Besides, I’m sure Pius XII had good reasons to add it to the liturgy. I, for one, am very glad he did.

Perhaps, but Holy Thursday is also the day that Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. I really have no idea what other day would be appropriate to commemorate this practice. :confused:

Thanks for the link. I never thought about having the foot washing moved to the Chrism Mass…that would make sense.

However, I must say that I disagree with Father Z’s opinion of the ritual, and I stand by my earlier statement. I find the foot washing to be a beautiful part of the Holy Thursday liturgy, and I would miss it if it was removed. I respect the decision of my bishop in this matter.

Lent ends on the day before Holy Thursday.

Technically it does, but that’s because of the Easter Tridium, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. It doesn’t mean that we can stop our Lenten sacrifices as we still have to abstain from meat and fast on Good Fridsy.

I remember growing up before Vatican 11 that Lent ended for us on noon on Holy Saturday. I think perhaps it was because Jesus was believed to be out of the tomb then.

It is.

Over the years, I’ve considered exercising that option (more than once).

The problem is that opting not to do it has the potential to cause as many problems as it solves–sometimes.

I have no problem with it at mass, not with women having their feet washed.

but why not just make the change?

or clarify that a change is not to be made?

I simply don’t feel comfortable participating in something tha ti know the priest doesn’t necessarily have the authority to do

maybe I’m just getting legalistic though.

I meant the foot washing.
I wouldn’t dream of missing the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and the transference to the Altar of Repose. That night spent in Adoration with my parents is one of my fondest memories as a child.

In our parish, it’s nearly impossible to skip one part without missing the whole thing. We don’t do the night in Adoration either. If we did, I would just come at the very end.

But light at the end of the tunnel… We are getting “redistricted” into another parish in about a year. I will give it another try then.

Sounds good! I hope it works out. It’s one of the most moving Masses when you really meditate on the readings. During the foot washing I just concentrate on the songs and don’t even watch.
If they don’t do the whole parish, it takes about 8 minutes.

Well no, it ends in the evening of HT, just before the HT Mass.

The HT Mass through Easter Sunday are the Triduum.
