At our parish, foot washing always included women but our Bishop said no more and published why in our church newspapers.
Well, at our Holy Thursday …our priest defied him and did it anyway using a couple of Nuns…now I think he was wrong to defy the bishop …should the incident be reported …I think some one could have already done so…but I am not sure what the protocol would be…
This is the statement published by our arch bishop:

At the celebration of the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, the rite of the Washing of the Feet is optional. Where it is celebrated in the Archdiocese of Atlanta, it is my decision that the rubric of the Roman Missal shall be observed, that is, that twelve men (viri selecti) should be chosen from the community to take the part of the Apostles during this rite, other directions in the Paulist ordo, or any other liturgical publications notwithstanding. The “Mandatum” or Washing of the Feet, should be explained to the Faithful as a representation of Christ’s linkage of the institution of the Eucharist to the establishment of the Ordained Priesthood, and the burden of service placed upon those who are called to the Priesthood, in keeping with the events described and recalled in this most solemn Mass.

What do you think? and if priest in diocease won’t go along with it should the bishop be informed?

YES! And if he gets 200 identical letter don’t worry about it. What happens is everyone thinks that everyone else is sending a letter so they don’t and the result is no one does!

Thanks Bro Rich…I’ll do so before we have another Holy Thursday…come to think of it…you won’t believe some of the women (some men) took it as a personal affont to women and their service to the church…proceeded to demonstrate in front of the cathedral …

Take heart . . . at my mom’s church, the pastor decided that since Jesus made comments about the disciples going out and serving, that meant the parishoners should do the foot washing. He had parish council members wash the feet of 12 parishoners. —KCT
