Question: Is Vespers (Evening Prayer) normally recited on Holy Thursday if one will also be attending the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on the evening of Holy Thursday?

Or is Vespers only recited on Holy Thursday if one will NOT be attending the Mass of the Lord’s Supper?

If one will be attending the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, one does not pray Evening Prayer/Vespers.

Since this appears in red in both my three-volume Divine Office (UK) and my four-volume French breviary, I understand this to be an instruction and not a mere suggestion. My former pastor, who taught me how to pray the LOTH, also confirmed we do one or the other on that day, not both.

Similarly, one does not pray Vespers on Good Friday if one participates in the Liturgy of the Passion.

(I think the same is probably true of Vespers on Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil, but I do not recall a rubric specific to it?)

Maybe. I don’t recall off-hand. I have a mind like a sieve, and at the moment my breviaries are thousands of miles away from me on another continent so I can’t check. 😊

Edited to add: According to the Universalis app (UK Divine Office), on Holy Saturday “as far as the Liturgy of the Hours is concerned, the Easter Vigil takes the place of the Office of Readings.” This appears in red. No mention of EP/Vespers.

That’s it!

(Frankly, my doubt about the practice was whether the Easter Vigil replaces the Office of Readings or both Vespers and the Office of Readings? But I am sure you are correct that it is the former only)

I’m neither correct nor incorrect—I’m quoting verbatim what I read on the Universalis app. 😇

Yes, one does not pray Vespers (Evening Prayer) on Holy (Maundy) Thursday if you are going to the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Similarly, you omit Vespers on Good Friday is you attend the Solemn Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion.

No, on Holy Saturday one prays Vespers even if one is attending the Easter (Paschal) Vigil.

If you are attending the Easter Vigil you omit Compline (Night Prayer) on Holy Saturday and the Office of Readings (Matins/Nocturns/Vigils) of Easter Sunday.
