Holy Water at Mass (Question)

You are more than welcome to Cross yourself and use the Holy Water to bless yourself. It have always been my understanding that everyone is free to do so, one does not have to be Catholic inorder to do so.

Also to the OP I was taught to Bless myeself with the Holy Water as I enter and exit the Church. the Bless as we exit it to remind us that we carry our baptiziamal promise out into the workld as we go.

blessing ourselves with holy water as we go into the Parish helps us prepare for Mass and being in the Lord’s Real Presence, then we can bless ourselves with it as we go out to prepare us to live and spread the Gospel to the world around us outside the Parish walls.

When I go to Mass, I usually dip my hand in the holy water on the way into church, make the sign of the cross, and then go in.

I do the same after Mass on the way out.

Somebody commented that it should be done on the way into Mass, but is not necessary on the way out. Is that correct?

You know, I really love the different opinions of my catholic brothers and sisters.

What is the harm in dipping my fingers in the holy water on my way out and blessing myself.

I do it all the time.

How we love to micro-manage other fellow catholic’s personal devotions and reverences.

You go ahead and continue to use the holy water font - coming in or going out - it’s all right.

I have also heard that Holy Water “washes away” or removes our venial sins, another reason people keep Holy Water at home (but I haven’t done so myself). Any truth to this?

Did you know my friend that the only thing that will take away sin is the blood of Christ. Blessings.

My granddaughter goes to a Catholic school and the teachers forbid the children to bless themselves after mass, stating they are leaving the circle of Christ if they do so and when my granddaughter does it anyway she is made fun of. I was raised, raised my daughters the same way and they are raising their daughters the same way, that before returning into the world after mass you should bless yourself, taking Christ with you. Where does the teaching they are forcing on the children come from? I have never heard of this before.

I have no idea where that would come from. I was taught and still to this day bless myself with the Holy Water on the way in ( as a sign of my union in baptizm with all that enter for worship) and on the way out ( as a reminder to carry my baptizmal promise into the world)
I do the same as i leave my home. there is no teaching by the Church on when the layity are not to bless themselfs it is a private devotional. a small t traditition.

Interesting Question, I went to Mass for my first time on Sunday. I felt a immediate sense of the feeling of home. “I was Christened Catholic” It was awkward as i just followed along, i didnt know all the right things to do and just did what everyone else was doing. Some of it came naturally. As I left the church, i too dipped my hand in the holy water and immediately felt lightheaded… to the point i immediately took my hand out. Does anyone have any idea what thats about? All normal things i have debunked, it was definitely spiritual in nature.
