Hello,

I was wondering if any of you have a holy water font in your homes? I have a small jar/bowl that I use as a holy water font in my bedroom but I don’t have one that you hang on the wall.

Also, has anyone ever made their own holy water font? If you have, I would love to hear your suggestions for fonts.

Thanks

yes we do. we have a store bought one at our front door hanging on the wall.

We too have a font in our home. It is in the entry way from our Living Room (which is the whole front of the house) to our hallway (which opens to the rest of our house). Basically, you pass it to enter our home. 🙂

What an interesting thought! I have never seen a holy water font in homes. I look forward to reading the responses.

I have one on the inside entrance of the front door. I bought very inexpensively in my church’s religious articles store. I also would like to here about people who have made their own.

I, too, have a font on the inside entrance of the front door.

A small bowl in the bedroom is a good idea…I have a plastic bottle. I use that sacramental with faith!

A Third Order Franciscan shared that when she meets with her community once a month, they use a simple, chipped bowl for holy water, in imitation of St. Francis’ holy poverty. 🙂

I used a four once, squat mason jar with a lid. Holy Water evaporates fast in my house. My traditional font empties too fast. 😃

My bowl that I have in my room with holy water is a small mason jar as well! They do evaporate so very fast.

:doh2:Why hadn’t I thought about evaporation? I have thought that one font I have is porous and was wondering how to seal it but maybe it’s just evaporation. :hmmm:

I have one at each of our entrances. There is one that sits on the table. There is one in the bedroom. In another bedroom, there is a wall full. My son’s bedroom and his brother collect them. We use to have one in the hall but since we “remodeled” it has been mending on a kitchen counter.

I know what you’re saying and I was confused too. Where I used to live (less than 300 miles away) I didn’t have this problem. Now I do. Different climates.

We keep one hanging next to our front door and one hanging in our daughter’s room, next to her bed. We purchased them through Cotter’s Church Supply. I have seen some very interesting vintage and antique fonts on eBay and at our local antique swap meet, though. We have one that is shaped like a seashell, that a free standing crucifix attaches to, in an antique sick call set. It’s lovely, but the silver plate is pealing up, so we don’t keep it filled. That is the only thing that has prevented me from picking up additional antique fonts.

I tried the font and found the water evaporated as well, so now I have two 16 oz bottles I keep holy water in. I use the sacramental frequently as I heard Father Joseph Espers once on EWTN talk about the importance of it. My son said one his high school teachers keeps a gallon jug in her classroom. I am not sure if she blessed the children with it or their desks before they walk in or what.

The Jewish custom is to have a mezuzah where Catholics might have a holy water font, at the front doorpost of the house. It is a little metal thing with some scripture folded up inside. It’s a lot less maintenance than something with water in it.

The point is that Catholics anoint themselves with holy water when entering. 😉

Have you tried painting clear nail polish on the inside? Sometimes that works, although it does have to repeated from time to time.
