I have read many times an article regarding the uses of holy water, and in that article it talks of sprinkling holy water on the Holy Souls…How eactly is one to do this? Sprinkiling on the floor with the intention of helping the Holy Souls?

Thank You,

Hi Carlton.

Yes! I do this each and every time I am at a font either in the Church or at home. I am pleased to say it has become a habit of mine and would like to see it become a habit of yours.

There are souls in Purgatory who need just a single drop of Holy Water sprinkled in their name in order to be released into Heaven.

I always sprinkle a few drops on the ground and say the prayer “Eternal Rest grant unto them O Lord. May perpetual light shine upon them. May the rest in your Peace.”

Glad to have come across this thread !

This day - 9/11, when the thought of departed persons are esp. with us , this is a good devotion to cherish , to make alive in the lives of families …

In a world where many , not able to care about the will of God… those who are blessed to do things in accordance with His will , in the simple trusting faith of His Mercy, entrusted through The Church…and have the joy of being able do such a simple yet powerful act …

May be something the priests can remind the faithful - even children standing at the entrance , before a Sunday Liturgy, with the Holy Water at hand , to remind the faithful …

Could it be even effective , in some resistant situations -such as thumb sucking in children …smoking addictions …ministry to the elderly, who are shut in , and depressed - who feel their lives no longer have much impact …

Even a delightful ritual , for the whole family, esp the little ones , after the family prayer …

Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and mayYour Light shine upon them …

And on their graves I have heard. Esp. when visiting the graves of loved ones.

I don’t sprinkle the ground. Instead, I bless myself with the holy water, reciting: “By this holy water and by Thy Precious Blood, cleanse us from all our sins. In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

I have just recently started doing this and I also include a prayer for the Holy Souls.

Prayer of
St. Gertrude the Great

Our Lord dictated the following prayer to St. Gertrude the Great to release Souls from Purgatory each time it is said.

"Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."

Wow! I’ve never heard of this tradition! I will start doing this today! 🙂

And Marymol, you are right about helping the Holy Souls being a “life mission” for some people. My grandmother spends many hours every day praying for the Holy Souls 👍 She says she feels it is her mission right now to help them.

Thank you for posting this I never heard of it but will now start doing it. I pray the St Gertrude prayer many times during the day and pray for the Souls in Purgatory in other way!

Again , good to see the responses and interest in this devotion …

Know of this family that had an experience that aslo show the spiritual reality of seemingly simple things …

During their house blessing , the priest who entered in through the side garage door , did not return to the foyer …This was recalled , when months later , someone specially gifted with charisms , called out , all of a sudden, while standing in the foyer , that the front door had not been blessed - how such a simple omission could be ‘seen’ …!

House blessings …holy water for (living) holy souls …- a good old practice , to make parish families more at home , and connected …well, may be not practical , in these days of busy schedule for priests …

Which brings to mind , the special significance of today’s Feast of Bl. Mother - Feast of Holy Name of Mary …

4 days after Feast of Nativity …was she sprinked with water… …a sign of The Holy Spirit …

And , is that 4 also linked to the fours and 40 s in O.T …
(well, not intending to derail the thread… )

Our Bl. Mother , who some believe , is the one who take the holy water to the holy souls …not an inconcievable role , to the Mother of our Lord of the universe …

whose cry ’ I thirst’ will be specially recalled , on the 14th - Feast of Exaltation of The Holy Cross …was it the anguish of that Mother, standing next to Him … wanting to whet those lips , that earned her the merit , to alleviate the thirst of her children , in purgatory …

The Mother, whose tears will be esp. recalled on the 15th - Feast of Our Lady of Sorrrows …

Holy Water indeed …water made holy …may it esp. be of help to all the arid in the heart …

O Mary , concieved without sin, pray for us !
