That is commonly done during the blessing of the pets on St. Francis day.

I sometimes do this when I bless my children before bed. After all they are in charge (at least in our house) in watching over the children at night when we are all asleep. Why not give them a little help.👍

What benefit would it give a pet? (i don’t actually know what Holy water does :D)

It would be the same benefit of having objects blessed (e.g. your house). It is just to invoke protection.

If holy water gets sprinkled on Churches, medals, altars, pews, houses, etc, why would it be wrong for it to be sprinkled on pets?

Holy water is a sacramental…its a sign of something outward, something greater. In this case, fidelity to your promises made at baptism (or the promises your parents made on your behalf).

Some saints have suggested holy water has a miraculous ability to repel evil in some cases, although as far as I know, the Church has no official position on the subject.

I use holy water liberally…and sometimes on my pets 👍
