Holy Water Placement

Hello all, Just a quick question regarding holy water. I was wondering if you could put holy water in an electronic fountain, I already have many holy water fonts but I just wanted to know about this. Its kind of random but thanks for you answers.
 
To me that doesn’t seem very appropriate… But waiting to see what others say. 🙂
 
No I must say I agree but I have had people ask me about that before… seems random right and now I am asking for myself. The point they were trying to get through according to them was that the water is flowing and is a better reminder of their baptism.

I have seen many Churches with large holy water fonts with electric pumps which pump the water through a channel where it falls or flows into the man pool.

St. Joe’s in Marietta, Georgia has one. I recall seeing one right in the middle of the Cathedral in Detriot, Michigan.

How would you get enough water to fill an electric fountain? We have a big font in one parish, but a tiny bowl in the other. I suppose you could bring your own water to be blessed…

I could be wrong but I assumed the OP was talking about those little fountains that plug into the wall that you can put on your table or whatever. And they trickle around rocks and stuff like that.

OP, I don’t see why not. As another poster mentioned, many parishes have electric pumps in their fonts. Mine does. I think it would be kind of cool to have that in your house.
 
It seems a bit uncouth to me to put holy water in an electronic dispenser. Perhaps even bad manners? I think sits in that realm.

That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

If by electronic fountain you mean one that has one of those little pumps that fish tanks have where they pick up water from the bottom and it comes out of some opening at the top, the answer is yes you can do so.

The reason is actually very practical. If you have a large amount of water, it stagnates if it’s not kept moving. We’ve all seen water when it develops a film, which is most unpleasant. The movement avoids this.

Would it need a pump that can accommodate salt water?

I dunno…🤷

I only ask because I have a desktop fountain that needs distilled water to keep the innards from getting jammed up from minerals, salts, etc. found in tap water. I’m pretty sure that if I replace the distilled water with holy water it would eventually stop working.

Holy water doesn’t have as much salt as a saltwater aquarium. It’s pretty dilute. Maybe it won’t clog up the works.

Can you give a link that would show what you are talking about? It could be nice devotion. It could be disrespectful.

I’ve seen a many churches have some form of moving water associated with the baptismal font. I seriously doubt that there is a church teaching against pumping holy water. About 50% of the newer churches have them in this region, so it can be a nice devotion. The common theme seems to be a bowl that has water pumped in from the bottom. The water spills out on all sides, and makes a nice looking font. That way, as the amount of water in the font is reduced, the way the bowl looks remains the same.

I have a little bottle of holy water from Achill sitting beside my window since I was 14 or so. To this day it is still completely and utterly pure and fresh!

But yes, it might depend on the particular font. Our cathedral has a baptismal font near the front door, like a pillar with constantly running water. Theres little that sounds better than running water. I suppose that makes sense why it’s like that now 😛

Wait-are we still talking about miniature rock fountains you can put on your counter at home?

We also have a pretty large font at my parish. It has a smaller “top section” that they hold the babies over and a bigger section on the floor where the adults kneel for baptism. And the water is always running from the top section to the bottom, I’m assuming because it has a pump.

I don’t know much about chemistry; but I get the impression that it only happens to water that is exposed to the environment. I’ve seen it in ponds too. The water develops a film. I’m thinking that water in a bottle with a cap is protected form the environment.

Not as far as I’m aware, bottled water has a sell by date. I’ll also never forget the smell from a bottle of water left in the corner of my sisters house when they had just moved in, terrible.
