Holy Water

Ok so I have heard this going both ways and I was wondering if there was any actual teaching about this. I have heard that if you have a bottle of Holy Water that is almost empty and you fill it up with regular tap water that it all becomes Holy Water. I have also heard the when you do that it is just tap water. I have also heard that if more than half of the bottle is Holy Water that you can fill it with tap water and it all becomes Holy Water. Is any of this true? Does anyone know for sure?
 
I …don’t think so. Just remember to take your bottle to mass and refill at the font there, I say.
 
It’s not like the Eucharist. So really it’s just the prayer that counts. So I say it really doesn’t matter. If you are that concerned just ask the priest to bless it for you or take some from the holy water font as was suggested.

What I wonder is whether a priest has to bless the water or whether anyone can ask God’s blessing for water. Obviously a priest’s blessing would be more significant but can’t we all ask God to bless our food and water before we eat and drink?

Yes…but Holy water is a very unique sacramental. And it (like various other sacramentals) needs the blessing of a Priest (etc).

I agree with your point of view, but this is not a lot, as long as we insist on enough!

I was told by a SSPX bishop that adding plain tap water to holy water…all the water becomes holy.

By that token if you were to pour Holy water into a lake the whole lake is then Holy water?

No, it doesn’t work that way.

It can be topped up provided that the original Holy Water is at least 50% of the total. Topping up thereafter means no Holy Water.
 
I hear it must be 33.56 percent holy water for it to become all holy water.👍

That is certainly not correct.

The Holy Water must be more than 50% of the whole.

Jones “Moral Theology” states that tap water can be added to Holy Water as long as the volume added is less than the volume of Holy Water. (Jones Moral Theology, 8th Edition, #465)

If you are not familar with Jones, it was the primary textbook for basic Moral Theology and Sacramentology for seminarians prior to Vatican II.

And an answer in Ask An Apologist forum from Father Serpa to the question can tap water be added to Holy Water:

"Yes, this is acceptable. But make sure the the majority of the water is the blessed water and not what was added.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P."

I agree. I read that too before, though I can’t remember the source, that 51% of it has to be the originally-blessed holy water.
