Holy Water

I truly love the use of the sacramental of holy water but I have just run out of some that a friend of mine gave me. I was wondering, how do I go about acquiring more from a Priest? Can I just fill some up from the baptismal font or the holy water fonts or do I need to talk to a priest directly?

I have one more question that I know the answer will probably be no to: can I make my own holy water at home?

Only clergy can make holy water. In addition to the “fonts” where people dip their fingers, many churches have a holy water reservoir with a faucet, where you can fill up at your leisure. (Being reasonable of course – it would be a little selfish to take four gallon jugs.) If your church doesn’t have such a faucet, just ask the priest after Mass where you can get more.

Little known fact: On certain solemn occasions like Easter, you can obtain special holy water (Easter water, Epiphany water, etc.) with more blessings attached to it. Usually you have to notify the priest at least a day or two in advance, and provide your own water to be blessed; though some priests hand it out themselves.
 
As ad orientem said, only priests or deacons can make holy water. There is usually a holy water “tank” (I’m sure there is a liturgically more-correct term for it, but I don’t know) somewhere. Also, feel free to fill up at the baptismal water font as well, but not the small side fonts.
 
you can take tap water and boil the hell out of it, but only a priest can make it holy…😃

check with your parish, ours has a large urn with a tap that you can get some from.

I guess until I can make it to my parish, I’ll just have to boil the hell out of some water. That will do for a few days i guess. lol.
 
I only really use Holy Water when Im going in or out of Church. What are other good “uses” for it? What else do you all do with it?

You can use it to bless yourself or your house. Also, it is good to sprinkle it places like your car or your homes bedrooms. You can even put it in food to give it some blessing i think. There is no real limit as long as you are using it for veneration of what you can do with holy water.

Thanks! I didnt realize Holy Water was so easy to get and use, I’ll have to look into getting some 🙂
 
A priest once told me that the holy water was disappearing each week from Church. He couldn’t understand why there was so much usage. One day he watched as an older lady came in with a bucket and filled it. He asked her what she was doing with so much Holy Water. She told him she was washing her floors:eek:
This use of Holy Water is not recommended. 😉
 
McCall, we keep a small font by the front door and bless ourselves when going out. I used to bless the children’s beds with it if the were having nightmares or didn’t feel well. We bless the car before long trips. I have never cooked with it or drunk it though.
 
For a while there, my kids kept having nightmares. I would bless them with Holy Water before bed. One memorable night, my oldest boy was worried about his younger brother who kept sleepwalking and falling off the top bunk of the bunkbed. The youngest was already asleep but I took the Holy Water and asks the lord to sprinkle His angels like these drops of water and keep him safe.

About an hour later I rushed into the bedroom to the youngest screaming. He was yelling at no one I could see at the side of his bed yellin them to let him down! Interestingly enough, he chose St. Michael the Arch angel for his confirmation saint.
 
Interesting I had no idea that people took the Holy Water from the church I had only always used it going in and out of Mass.

At Easter many Paraises have it available in the church.

If Not just fill your container and take it to Mass and ask Father to Bless it after Mass,
 
You can buy nice little holy water fonts (I don’t know whether that’s the correct name for them) for hanging inside the hall door. We always put a small piece of sponge in the font and soak the sponge in holy water. That saves the water from evaporating too quickly, otherwise we would be forever refilling the font. The font is hung beside the hall door to remind us to bless ourselves every time we enter or leave the house.

Whenever any family or friends visit holy places or shrines, e.g. Knock (Ireland), Fatima, (Portugal), Lourdes (France), Maryemana (Turkey), they bring us back some holy water and we do the same for them.

I sometimes put it in food or drink, but I occasionally wonder how clean the reservoir was and whether the reservoir was really food-safe. 😉

You can get some at the back of the church,were they usually have it,some times it,s up left or right side of the alter,or the priest has some back were he comes out for Mass.
 
Funny, my mom wanted to take some of the holy water from the font the other day. She said she wants to bless our house with it or something. I didn’t think you could take water from the font like that… I wonder… can drinking holy water do anything for you?
