Holy Water

I have acquired a small jar of holy water from the parish that I am attending. It comforting to bless my doorways, myself, and yes even my dogs. Something about blessing my surroundings gives me a peace of mind.

I was wondering about the following scenario. I have recently had my fences in my backyard blown over due to tornadic weather. Thank God the fences were all that were destroyed. After the fences came down, my backyard became open to more wildlife than I would prefer. Last night, my dogs stumbled upon two deceased baby rabbits. I have a extreme respect for nature and of course this troubled me. After work today, I stumbled upon the nest that happened to have two siblings to the ones I found deceased the prior evening. After getting my dogs inside, I went back out, prayed for the rabbits and their protection, and sprinkled some holy water on their nest (not directly on them).

Is this going too far? I just don’t want to overstep my bounds.

I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules about the uses of holy water. I think the key is to not use it in ways that are superstitious or overly frivolous. That said, I don’t see anything wrong with what you did. Personally, I’m a big softy when it comes to animals. I always cross myself when I see road kill.

No, Some people think I am crazy because I have a St. Michaels scapular at my front door and I prayed and asked Him to please protect my home inside and out and anybody inside or out of my house; and believe me He has. There was a shooting in front of my house and the man that was trying to shoot the woman shot at her four times and not one bullet could hit her. Well one bullet did hit the side of her head and bearly broke the skin. He hunts Deer and wild game and so he was a pro with guns. Never believe that God and His angels are afraid of anything; they are not. Blessing or praying for Gods creatures is a wonderful thing. Any thing we pray for is pleasing to God unless it is something sinful. He understands our needs no matter how foolish we think that they are. He is our Almighty Father and He understands all of our worries. Non of our worries are trivial to Him. Holy water I will bless anything with, and I have My priest bless my water, my rosaries, my scapular and any sacramentals that I have. Nothing wrong with that.

Sooner, no. I do not think you are going too far at all. I would do the same. They are God’s creatures. Sprinkling Holy Water and asking for protection is not overstepping bounds. In fact, every night, I ask the Holy Angels to surround our property and protect not only us from all evil, but the animals as well.

Exorcists sometimes use Holy Water when they are chasing the demon out of a possessed person. Holy Water is a Powerful Sacramental.

Two nights ago one of my canine “babies” died from seizures from Pug Dog Encphalytis (sp).

Not only did I bless her grave with holy water, I censed it as well.

God Blessed the animals in Genesis, so it would be okay to pray that God bless animals again. But I don’t think Holy water should be used anywhere, or on animals. Holy water is a source of grace, since it’s a sacramental. Animals may not receive grace since they don’t have immortal souls like us. I think you should with hold the Holy water, and say a short prayer instead.:nope:
