I just wanted to post some special indulgences that are available to us during this Holy Week. I’ll post the ones that I am aware of, but please feel free to post more if you’d like!

Down in adoration falling (Tantum ergo)

Down in adoration falling,
Lo! the sacred Host we hail;
Lo! o’er ancient forms departing,
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith for all defects supplying,
Where the feeble senses fail.

To the everlasting Father,
And the Son who reigns on high,
With the Holy Spirit proceeding
Forth from each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might and endless majesty. Amen.

V. You have given them bread from heaven,
R. Having all sweetness within it.
Let us pray. O God, who in this wonderful Sacrament left us a memorial of your Passion: grant, we implore you, that we may so venerate the sacred mysteries of your Body and Blood, as always to be conscious of the fruit of your Redemption. You who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. (Roman Breviary)

A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful, who devoutly recite the above strophes. But

**a plenary indulgence is granted on

Holy Thursday and on
the feast of Corpus Christi,
**if they are recited in a solemn manner.

Adoration of the Cross (Crucis adoratio)

A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful, who in the solemn liturgical action of Good Friday devoutly assist at the adoration of the Cross and kiss it.

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus (En ego, o bone et dulcissime Iesu)

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus, while before your face I humbly kneel, and with burning soul pray and beseech you to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true contrition for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment, while I contemplate with great love and tender pity your five wounds, pondering over them within me, calling to mind the words which David, your prophet, said of you, my good Jesus: “They have pierced my hands and my feet; they have numbered all my bones” (Ps 21, 17-18).

A plenary indulgence is granted on each Friday of Lent and Passiontide to the faithful, who after Communion piously recite the above prayer before an image of Christ crucified;

on other days of the year the indulgence is partial.

And a final note on indulgences:

To acquire a plenary indulgence it is necessary to perform the work to which the indulgence is attached and to fulfill the following three conditions:
sacramental confession,
Eucharistic Communion, and
prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff.
It is further required that all attachment to sin, even venial sin, be absent.

If the latter disposition is in any way less than perfect or if the prescribed three conditions are not fulfilled, the indulgence will be partial only, saving the provisions given below in Norm 34 and in Norm 35 concerning those who are “impeded.”

** The three conditions may be fulfilled several days before or after the performance of the prescribed work; it is, however, fitting that Communion be received and the prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff be said on the same day the work is performed.**
A single sacramental confession suffices for gaining several plenary indulgences; but Communion must be received and prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff must be recited for the gaining of each plenary indulgence.
The condition of praying for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary; nevertheless, each one is free to recite any other prayer according to his piety and devotion.
The norms regarding plenary indulgences, particularly the one stated above in Norm 24, 1, apply also to what up to now have been customarily called “toties quoties” “as often as”] plenary indulgences.
An indulgence cannot be gained by a work, to which one is obliged by law or precept. unless the contrary is expressly stated in the grant; one, however, who performs a work which has been imposed as a sacramental penance and which happens to be one enriched with an indulgence, can at the same time both satisfy the penance and gain the indulgence.

A plenary indulgence is granted for those who piously exercise the Way of the Cross, actually moving from station to station where they are legitimately erected and while mediating on the passion and death of our Lord (“Enchiridion of Indulgences,” No. 63).

FIRST COMMUNION. PLENARY INDULGENCE is granted to those who receive Communion for the first time or to those who ASSIST at the sacred ceremonies of a First Communion.

Plenary indulgence for renewing one’s baptismal promises during the Easter Vigil or on the anniversary of one’s baptism.

There are other plenary indulgences that you can obtain every day of the year - Stations of the Cross, which you mentioned, can be done any time.

Half an hour of Scripture reading or half an hour in Adoration are also enriched with a plenary indulgence. So is praying five decades of the Rosary in one go, either in a group anywhere, or by yourself in a Church, chapel or Oratory.

So do one of these every single day that you receive Communion, confess every two weeks or oftener and that adds up to an awful lot of indulgences, either for yourself or the poor souls in purgatory!

That’s me! Hopefully, that means one of the poor souls in Purgatory is getting out this saturday!

Yep! I try to gain one every time I go to mass and offer one up for a soul in purgatory. I just wanted to make people aware of some of the particular indulgences that were available this time of year!🙂

I’m sure they can’t wait!🙂 Just think how many souls we could release from purgatory if everyone went to confession at least every two weeks, and then spent a half an hour reading the bible everytime they went to mass, and said an Our Father and a Hail Mary for the Pope’s intentions. It really isn’t that difficult to gain plenary indulgences, especially for the Holy Souls.

Well, it’s not that easy either. You do have to get rid of all attachment to sin… and those venial sins are tricky ones to learn to despise…

so hypothetically you only need one plenary indulgence in your entire life to get into Heaven right away to avoid Purgatory. And the other way around. If you don’t plan on dieing anytime soon the plenary indulgence will surely be nullified within a day or so after one starts to sin again venially at least. I don’t understand the concept of indulgences since it seems like they go to waste since they will be nullifed soon after.

Well, provided you don’t mortally sin, and go to Mass and communion every Sunday and confession every two weeks, you have the opportunity to earn a plenary indulgence every* single* week, not just once in your life. If you go daily you can earn one every day!

Your attitude is a bit like saying ‘no point showering and brushing my teeth today, since I’m only going to need to shower and brush my teeth again tomorrow’. Of course salvation and repentance are ongoing processes, just as keeping your body and teeth clean are.

I get what you are saying but I think you misunderstood what I am asking. If I know that in my lifetime I will sin and more likely than not mortally, do indulgences get wasted or nullified? Is one any better off with a nullified indulgence than not ever having the indulgence to begin with? What good is an indulgence if you know you are going to sin again. The conditions set for a plenary indulgence seem almost impossible. So does one still get the partial indulgence then that I saw mentioned earlier and what is a partial indulgence and how many does it take to equal a plenary one?

You also know you are going to die, and you don’t know when. If you get a plenary indulgence often, I don’t understand why you say it won’t help. Eventually you are going to die shortly after. Also, prayer is good, indulgence or no. Talking to God is helpful no matter what. 🙂

Anyway, I offer them for the souls in Purgatory, and not for myself.

Again, if I have a shower now I can be morally certain that by tomorrow I’ll be smelly again - back at square one - and need another shower.

Does that mean that if I have a shower now it’s useless??? Of course not. Because it achieves its aim of cleaning me. It’s up to me to keep showering daily to keep myself continuously clean.

And yet it’s much more certain that I’ll need another shower in the next 24 hours than it is that I’ll mortally sin again - ever.

So simply - keep trying! Every Sunday without fail, when you go to Mass and receive Communion, do something which has been enriched with a Plenary Indulgence (half an hour reading scripture is probably the easiest - it can be done anywhere any time). If possible go to Mass and receive more often. And confess every two weeks without fail.

These things in themselves will help you improve sinwise if nothing else, so they’re worthwhile no matter what.

No, any and all indulgences can be applied to the Poor Souls In Purgatory, if that is your intention. That one-a-day Plenary Indulgence can be used to release one soul per day, which is my intention once confirmed tomorrow. All partial indulgences can also be offered. I do a daily morning offering for the Poor Souls, and a daily Heroic Act.

For example, when you do a daily Rosary, EVERY one of those prayers carries a partial indulgence. Isn’t that nice?🙂

Your answers make sense. I don’t spend much time other than the minimum going to mass and praying and stuff but I don’t think any of us spend enough time on that. However, if I do get some sort of plenary indulgence or partial indulgence I can offer it up for the souls in Purgatory since their the ones that really need it. I know at my age I can’t say I meet those three conditions for the indulgence yet and as I think I mentioned, I don’t think it matters what age one is those three conditions are almost impossible as not ever sinning mortally again is hard enough but being detatched from venial sin is nearly impossible.
