I wish I could go to them all! But, I promised my friends I would take a trip with them, and thus I must miss Holy Thursday this year grrr! But, luckily, we will be near a church Good Friday, so I’ll go them. As for the Easter Vigil, I might actually be serving that Mass (though I’m not sure yet). And, I’m for sure going to the Easter Sunday Mass.

I also go to the Chrism Mass at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. The Mass is on Tuesday afternoon of Holy Week. It was moved to Tuesday from Holy Thursday morning by Cardinal Bernadin. I don’t know why he did it, but then I never tried to understand why he did anything. I hope Cardinal George moves it back to Holy Thursday morning, but he hasn’t yet and I don’t think he will since he’s been here for 8 years. It’s the only Novus Ordo Mass I attend during Holy Week.

The Mass is mostly in English, with some Spanish and Polish thrown in. Chicago has a large Hispanic community and has the second largest Polish population in the world next to Warsaw.

I love the blessing of the sacred oils and the procession of all the bishops and priests into the cathedral. Despite the planning of the liturgists, Cardinal George is able to make the Mass reverent. Mass abuses on the whole are down since he became archbishop.

It’s the same thing in our diocease, Tuesday evening. I think the Bishop moved it because it would be too much for all the priests to attend and then drive back to their parish (which in someplaces could be over an hour’s drive) for the very busy Paschal Tridiuum weekend.

Unfortunately, in present day America, Holy Thursday and Good Friday are ordinary work days for most folks including myself.

Easter Sunday is always an excellent day to be at mass, however, with a lot of people who are traditionally well dressed.

Well, I go to Holy Thursday, Good Friday (the Communion Service), Easter Vigil… yes I am alterserving… and then Easter Sundy! Our family makes a point to attend all because this is the most imporant time of the year!

God Bless–JMJ

I act as master of ceremonies at all the Holy Week services and train the altar servers for each of the services, so I will be there at them all. I am lucky enough to be able to take vacation from Wednesday, of Holy Week to Wednesday of the next week.

I have not missed a Holy Week service since 1968.

That’s a wonderful thing to be able to say djjg- i wish i could! i too am mcing at masses in Holy Week, and am searching for advice- maybe you could contact me!
As for mass, college breaks up on holy thursday, and im going to evening mass then, and good friday, and easter sunday.

This year, probably all of them.I’m in the adult choir at our parish, which sings at the Holy Thursday Mass and the Easter Vigil. I’ll probably attend Tre Ore at our parish on Good Friday because I think it’s important to be there (and since I have the day off from work this year). I will likely be singing on Easter Sunday as well, either as a cantor or with our Chamber choir.

Also, anyone in the NY-NJ metropolitan area is invited to attend the Good Friday Liturgy (from 1962 missal) at Holy Rosary Church in Jersey City, NJ, several blocks from the Holland Tunnel. It’ll be completely chanted with wooden clappers, etc.

Oops…forgot to mention that the Good Friday Liturgy (Mass of the Presanctified) at Holy Rosary Church will be at 4:30pm.

I plan to go to regular weekday Mass on Wednesday, then Good Friday (Liturgy of the Passion and Stations of the Cross) then Sunday Easter Mass. I have two small boys who got very restless during Palm Sunday Mass. I don’t think they can handle Easter Vigil, too. I also plan to attend the Parish Mission that we are having this year on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

I am going to be a busy girl this week. I am singing in the choir for the Chrism Mass on Monday. Wednesday night I will be attending Tenebrae at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in DC, Thursday night I am going to the Solemn High Latin Holy Thursday Mass at Old St Mary’s. Friday I will be back home singing for Good Friday liturgy, Saturday we sing for the Easter Vigil and Sunday we sing at noon Mass with the bishop presiding. WHEW!

Psalm45:9:

This isn’t the case in Chicago, as the archdiocese serves only Cook and Lake Counties. It’s no more than an hour and a half drive from Holy Name Cathedral anywhere in the archdiocese, maybe two hours in heavy traffic. Either way, they would still be back at their parishes in plenty of time.

The Rockford Diocese still has their Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday morning and it covers much more geographic territory than Chicago.

Usually I attend all three services in the triduum, rarely going to church on Easter Sunday itself.

But this year I’ll go to my local parish for Holy Thursday and hopefully visit seven churches in the area that night (Catholic churches are just blocks apart here).

Then on Good Friday I will be attending the Traditional Latin Mass of the Presanctified Good Friday Liturgy (with wooden clappers and chanted Passion and hymns during the Adoration of the Cross) at 4:30pm at Holy Rosary Church in Jersey City, NJ.

(Anyone is welcome to attend this solemn liturgy, which is the first time in about 40 years it is being celebrated in this diocese. There should be a program sheet with the English translations.)

And I’m skipping Easter Vigil this year and am going to Holy Rosary again for the Tridentine Mass on Easter Sunday at 12:30pm, with plenty of chant and 4-part harmony. Anyone interested is welcome to attend that too.

I think it is wonderful to worship and give glory to God in this way, and I hope anyone reading this can get that chance.

BTW, Holy Rosary Church is a few blocks from the Holland Tunnel on the Jersey side. Directions can be found at

Something’s wrong with, this must be incorrect. Your results show more people attending Good Friday than Easter Sunday. I have trouble believing that this is a correct result.

Ignatius - RE Something’s wrong with, this must be incorrect. Your results show more people attending Good Friday than Easter Sunday. I have trouble believing that this is a correct result. Note that both the Easter Vigil and the Easter mass count for Sunday. While some may go to both, many of us won’t. The total of the two is well above the Friday attendance.

Urgh. I have to amend my answer. My boss and co-workers sent me home sick at lunch today, so I’ll be missing tonight’s Mass and Tre Ore tomorrow. Pray that I’ll be well enough to attend Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday Masses. Please also pray for our music director, who yesterday thought that he was coming down with the flu.

I am so excited I am about ready to jump out of my skin. I, after 25 years, went to confession two days ago. I can not wait to receive communion tonite, I hope it lasts all night and then I could just go straight to the Staions of the Cross. Ohhhhhhh!!! so excited. Hurry up day and get done.

The Lords Last supper, Good Friday and the Easter vigil- Saturday night. This has very special meaning to us. Also the anniversary of my family becoming Catholic.
