Hello! With Holy Week fast approaching, I figure it’s time that I learn more about it. What exactly does Holy Week celebrate and why do we celebrate it? Thank you!
Holy Week is the final week of Lent, and the week preceding Easter. Holy Week begins from Palm Sunday, all the way until Holy Saturday. Holy Week celebrates, or more appropriately, the commemoration of the Lord’s Passion. On Palm Sunday, we read the Passion, and celebrate the entrance of Christ into Jerusalem. Blessed palms are distributed, etc. Following that, is Holy Thursday, with the Mandatum (washing of the feet) and the commemoration of the institution of the Eucharist. Holy Thursday Mass ends with a Eucharistic procession to the altar of repose, where adoration is kept, traditionally, throughout the night. The following day, Good Friday, we commemorate the Lord’s Passion, with a reading of the Passion according to Saint John, along with the Veneration of the Cross, and following that, the reception of the Eucharist, consecrated before, during the Holy Thursday Mass. Then, you have Holy Saturday, where we wait with Mary, as Christ in is the tomb.Hello! With Holy Week fast approaching, I figure it’s time that I learn more about it.
