Holyday Mass and work commitments

I’ve been asked to work extra hours at work this week as my department is short-staffed and people are on holiday. Unfortunately if I work the extra hours it will be difficult to attend Mass on 29 June - Saints Peter and Paul - as I’ll be working a 12-hour shift, plus over an hour of travelling time. Under the circumstances - as it may cause problems at work if I don’t work the extra hours - do I have legitimate reason not to attend Mass? Or should I not work the extra hours?
 
June 29th is a Friday. I don’t think it’s a day of obligation. If I’m wrong and it is, then you should not take the hours. If I’m right and it isn’t, then you have to decide based on how badly you need the hours and how it might effect you job. Perhaps you can listen to the liturgy on the radio?
 
Allegra, the OP is outside the US and is subject to the holy days in the UK.

Mark, is there any chance of attending a vigil Mass the evening before? You might check for someplace close to where you work as well as close to home.

I’m actually working a night shift, 6pm to 6am. But I’ll be leaving for work shortly after 5pm and getting back home about 6:30am, both Thursday and Friday night, as it’s a 30-minute journey by car each way. The Vigil Mass in my parish, and in the other churches in my area, is after 6pm. There is a morning Mass after I get home, but like everybody else I need sleep, especially between doing 2 consecutive 12-hour night shifts! (Sorry, not trying to be sarcastic - I could try for the morning Mass but I’m concerned about not getting the rest I need between working two nights.)
 
My best guess is that it’s OK, but if it were me, I’d check with my pastor and ask for a dispensation. Then you know you’re OK.
 
simply phone your priest and tell him of your situation. You can be dispensed from the obligation if you have to work.
