I want to make a home altar, but being a graduate student, I don’t have a lot of money or space. How can I create one that is respectful but not too expensive?

How about a wall mounted one on which you can vary your themes according to the liturgical year? Something like this (if you are into your antiques!)I want to make a home altar, but being a graduate student, I don’t have a lot of money or space. How can I create one that is respectful but not too expensive?

In the dollar store you can find a round or square table or stand for under $8 or 10, a lace or white table cover, and even very often religious artwork. I have a nice collection of framed icons and religious art in my office–all taken from calendars or greeting cards and mounted in dollar store frames and mattes. a wall mounted bracket as pictured above us also under $10 in most housewares depts. (lowes for instance is cheaper than a hobby store, unless they are having a sale).
many of my icons, statues, crosses etc. have been found at tag sales and thrift shops, others as gifts.
I have a glass crucifix with the corpus etched in white, received as a gift, but they sell in the local supermarket for about $5.
keep your eyes open, and in choosing relgious art or devotional objects look for beauty, orthodoxy, and above all, choose only that which aids your devotion. less is more, simplicity is better than ornateness for its own sake.
you can also by pillar candles with saint decals for $1 in any store that caters to a Hispanic population, but I don’t recommend burning them, they are a safety hazard. better buy a pillar candle from your own church or chapel.
at Walmart I have found a tapestry-like table runner with OL Guadalupe executed very well, a lace table cover with the pattern of the Last Supper, and similar items, and they often have framed or matted religious pictures. the OLG in my kitchen was $2 at Walmart and is an accurate photographic reproduction of the original image on the tilma.
I have here on my desk, waiting to be framed in a $1 frame I got at the dollar store, a Father’s day card showing St. Joseph teaching the toddler Jesus to walk, darling, and I want to add it to my collction. total cost $1.50.
