Hi all,

I am building up a home altar. I also believe in the “dark side” because our Faith tells us so and also the writings of the saints. It is no joke. I take it very seriously. Many people I know laugh at the idea of the devil at their own peril. :eek: I feel sorry for them.😦

My home altar. Any additional ideas would be welcomed.

I have a book of the Gospels, my first class Reliquary, 4 in one:

S. Pii X P.C. (St. Pius X Pope, Confessor. EX CARNE) from the skin

S. Aug E.C.D. (St. Augustine Evangelist,Confessor,Doctor of the Church. SEPCULARI SANCTI) from the sepcular

S. Thom. Aq. C.D. (St. Thomas Aquinas Confessor, Doctor of the Church. EX OSSIBUS) from the bone

S. Bernardi Ab. C.D. (St. Benard, Confessor,Doctor of the Church. EX OSSIBUS) from the bone

(Complete matching document. Wax seal whole,in tact, matches seal on doc. String intact. Numbers match. If you would like pics I could email them to you. They are to big to post on here.)

One blessed St. Benedict crucifix over kitchen door. Blessed salt packet taped next to it.

Front door has blessed olive wood crucifix from Jerusalem with dirt from Jesus’s Tomb. One side of it blessed salt packet, other side blessed St. Benedict’s medal.

Basement door has blessed St. Benedict’s medal and blessed salt packet.

Bedroom has blessed crucifix, blessed palms, strip of willow, blessed salt packet, Holy Water Font, and blessed scapular.

Each side of house has at least one blessed St. Benedict medal, like a ring of protection.

How do you protect your home?
 
Divine Mercy images on each main door (front and back)
Crucifixes on each door
St. Benedict medals on the windowsills and main door.
… thats just to name a few
 
Wow…that’s um… that’s a lot.

My daughter has a plastic pieta that I got in the Vatican years back. I have a small pieta and an Our Lady of Grace on my dresser.
 
Wow- you guys are seriously decked out for spiritual warfare! I have some blesses palms, rosaries, scapulars, holy cards placed around the house, plus I sprinkle holy water around the place from time to time.
 
We have a crucifix above our door and another above our bed. I also have some blessed palms that are behind a picture of Mary. We also have a holy water font and I sprinkle it around the house every once in a while. I also have several rosaries around, as well as the baptismal candle I received at Easter Vigil this year. I’m not nearly done…I also believe in the “evil side” because I have experienced and seen things…You can’t be too careful!
 
On my home altar I have candles, holy cards, statues, my children’s chrism “shells” from when they were baptized, crosses, prayer books, rosaries, ;)and our confirmation “banners” (like shawls) from when we were confirmed into the Church. I take my home altar seriously!😉

A Jewish girlfriend gave me a MAZUZAH (spelling?) for my front door. Above it I put a prayer card of St. Michael, and recite the prayer entering and leaving the apartment. I figure Archangel Micheal is good enough. 👍

I have other stuff all over the apartment, of course:D
 
I have a crucifix in each of my three bedrooms, an enthroned Sacred Heart picture in the living room, a framed image of our Blessed Mother in each room of my home,(including the kitchen), and two Divine Mercy images of Our Lord in two of the bedrooms.
A framed “Last Supper” image is also in the kitchen.

There is a holy water font to the left on the wall as soon as someone enters the house.

I also have a statue and a framed picture of St. Therese of Lisieux, and a framed picture of St. Philomena.

I try to keep on hand Blessed St. Benedict medals and Green Scapulars to share with others.
 
is “altar” the proper word for it or would it be better to call it a “shrine”? coming from a pagan background, I hesitate to use the word altar…maybe it is just me.

This is not an Altar in the true sense of the word, since the primary function of an Altar is for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Shrine would be a better word to use 😉

  • Numerous spiritual books
I am looking to get some more sacramentals and medals 🙂

I was wondering the same thing. I am a pagan, and our family has two altars, with parallel types of items on them. But I know that in the Catholic faith, altar refers to a place where a sacrafice is being made, and shrine, to a place of honor.

Seriously, when I read this thread, it is so like the “what’s on your altar” threads at the pagan forums, I nearly forgot where I was. lol.

We all do seem to have those same ways of needing to be reminded what is important, and needing to honor that which is our source of strength. I think home altars and shrines are wonderful. It keeps the sacred in the forefront.

I’ve enjoyed reading/seeing everyone’s.

I probably won’t add anything in the future except a Holy Water font. I do plan to build a small shrine in the back yard for Our Lady.

"With God " prayer book by Fr F.X. Lasance 1911( semi-rare, hard to find in good condition)
"My Prayer Book " by Fr Lasance ( mine is a first edition, 1908, but they are available as reprints on ebay)
A few very old Holy Cards and a few new ones

I forgot to mention I have a Pietta and a statue of St. Micheal slaying the dragon. These two are museum grade and quite large. The Pietta has a blessed St. Padre Pio Rosary wrapped around it. These are not by my altar, however…

I would recommend that everyone have a holy water font in there homes and use it as much as possible throughout the day. This keeps demons at bay as so many saints have reported. It is very good for the soul…Try also to go to mass if you are catholic during the week. I try to go as much as possible. They are only about 30 minutes long, but you reap major rewards!

St Benedict will protect you if you pray to him. and use his medals and crucifixes. use the proper prayers for each.
