Home Altars in a time of Pandemic

I did the veiling thing this year for the first time. I don’t have any purple cloth but one of deep indigo blue so I used that. I do remember it happening at our parish as a kid in the 1960s, in the TLM to OF transition era.

Although I prefer the modern liturgy, I’m a bit of a traditionalist in that some venerable traditions I believe are worthy of keeping. One of which is Gregorian chant, which I use for the Liturgy of the Hours (in Latin) daily and which is used as the exclusive form of sacred music at the OF Mass I attend… when attending Mass was possible. Gregorian chant played a huge role in drawing me back to the faith after a long absence, and later in convincing me to become an oblate of a monastic congregation and abbey that is committed to preserving it.

I stumbled across it online a couple of years back while searching for the Precious Blood Crucifix, at the time my wife’s aunt had one (Precious Blood Crucifix) and we had seen it during Christmas while visiting (we both loved it), so come Easter time I went online searching for it to surprise my wife with, but I had forgotten the name of the crucifix so I googled realistic crucifix and came across this crucifix (which is called the Realistic Crucifix) which I instantly fell in love with and purchased instead, this man commissions these and they can take a while to get, luckily for me he had one available right away.
Anyways sorry for the long story, here is the website:

As an aside, it was 5 years later, before I (finally) purchased a Precious Blood Crucifix:

Also I have hand painted a crucifix myself, for my wife’s grandmother:

I personally find that a crucifix that accurately depicts the passion of Our Lord to be simultaneously beautiful and heartbreaking.
Most people that see my crucifix’s, complement them, still I am aware that it is a bit too much for some folks.

Yes it can be confronting to see the true gore depicted and definitely not for everyone. My daughter is an artist and she did this painting for a retreat for the Verbum Dei sisters a couple of years ago. We don’t have it hanging. It comes out for contemplation sometimes.
