I wish she knew that it could strenghen our family but she won’t listen! oh well, at least I have mine and my sister wants me to make her one 😃 !
Then live the example for them. And don’t push the issue. They may come around.

My husband and I took the top of our dresser and made it into an altar, we have a standing crucifix, a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, a Sacred Heart Statue, a Divine Mercy picture and a picture of our Lady of Good Success, we have a blessed candle and some Holy Water. Does this help? God Bless.

O.k. this is the kind of person I am, but I followed CatholicCajuns advice and moved it to the top of my dresser. I am happy they suggested it because it gave me alot more room. I also read that the Vatican said that standing is the most reverent position for prayer (don’t comment on this, go to another thread) so it’s the perfect height! Here’s some pics!

This is the whole thing!

My standing Crucifix, Sacred Heart, and Our Lady of Grace Statues

My Bible and though it didn’t get in the pic my prayer book and rosary

My two candles and John Paul II Picture

This section is dedicated to my grandfather who passed away in January the front is a pic of me and him and the back is the prayer card they gave out at the funeral and a petal from the roses at the gravesite and my Holy Water.

I took the picture and then I went and picked out some of the first spring flowers of my garden and put them at the foot of the crucifix. Can incense be used for personal prayer? I would like to have an incense burner in the future if I can. I just want to say thanks for all of your help, so 😃 THANKS! 😃

Bon Jour mais Aimee. I think your altar is beautiful, there are quite a few homes down here on the bayou that have them, my husband and I have chairs in front of ours, the knees won’t stand for kneeling for the hour of prayer we do every morning. God BLess. You.

SacredHeartFan, was it you who told me that you had relatives in Thibodaux? I had some saved emails and hubby “accidently” deleted them:p

One thing I have on my prayer altar is a prayer box which contains names of people I am praying for and also keep prayer cards you get from funeral home on deceased loved one or friend. This way I remember to pray for all these people.

We found one of those wooden pre-assembled fireplace cabinets on clearance at HomeDepot. It didn’t have the fireplace insert, so it worked perfect. In the hole where the gas fire log unit would go, we have a huge picture of our very traditional gothic church interior. We use a lace nativity (Christmas) table top runner as an altar cloth. Since the kids like to collect candles from the various shrines we visit, this is a perfect place to display them. Over time our little collection grew… We even found 2 kneelers at the church rumage sale (for a dollar! What a steal!) and that really makes it all look nice. I will try to post a pic.

SacredHeartFan: I love the plate!
I dont have an altar per say but a quiet and comfortable place with light for reading spiritual readings. You can use a pad or pillow for kneeling if you would like to kneel while you read and pray.
Pad? Pillow? Creature comforts in Lent?!!

😉 😉

I love your efforts! We have several areas that serve as “home altars” - and no we don’t intend to have Mass offered there. The primary one is our mantle which has at the heart of our home and image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

I’d like to invite you to view my website which has a lot of images from my readers’ homes of little niches and home altars they’ve set up. Scroll down to the “artifacts” and “from our readers” sections. It’s Catholic Home and Garden.
May God bless your process of discernment. Our own son is studying for the priesthood.

Does anyone else have pictures of theirs? I would love to look at them!

a home altar can take many forms, of course. but i like to have a small one for travel (and i am told it works well for people in dorms and shared apartments as well)

i was lucky enough to find a triptych of wood, but you can often find small folding cards from a Catholic store that can be used as your “stained glass window”

you will want a crucifix that can be made to stand up. in a pinch a regular crucifix and a small amount of either the wax earplugs, or modeling clay will do.

i take tea lights, but in areas that candles are not permitted there are now battery operated tea lights, they look nice if put IN something. for true portability, i made a paper “cube” that is just a long rectangle glued together and folded sharply to make a four sided “votive shield” for the electric light. (it can be folded flat)

add in a knotted twine rosary (i learned to make them at rosaryarmy.com ) and one of the tiny pocket prayer books and you have a portable altar that can fit in a wooden box and slip into your luggage.

i like to throw in a small silk handkerchief (cotton or even paper will do) as a “cloth” for my “altar” and i also use it to pad the items so they dont rattle…
