I turnd a shelf on it’s side and put a white pillowblanket over it. this has a crucifix on a stand and two white candles on each side. then under that, i have a stool with a blue towel on it. this has a statue of our lady of grace. then I printed a circular mosaic of St. Michael the Archangle and taped it to a plate which is on a gold stand. i just wondered if anyone esle did anything different. I hope to have a picture of it tommorow after mass.

Yeah, I have a shrine (not an altar, technically, since altars have the Holy Eucharist performed on them) It is a medium-sized table with a golden-coloured embroidered cloth covering it all the way to the floor. On it, there are three traditional pre-Vatican II-Era (The kind with the beautiful sombre colours and soft lighting) pictures with the Crucifixion in the center, with the Virgin Mary’s Assumption on the right, and the Ascension on the left. All of the Pictures are surrounded by MANY artificial, but beautiful, white roses and four devotional candles, with to large gold candlesticks on either side, and on the outer edge I have framed papers with the names of my deceased relatives on either side of the family (to pray for and with). Over it all I usually have a large Ecce Homo of Christ picture in a lavish frame, but I occasionally switch it with a large gold-coloured Crucifix that I got at an antique store (the kind with lots of rays of Light emanating from Christ’s head). I also have a little orthodox incense burner, the tabletop kind.

Thanks.👍 It’s also nice to see fellow-Catholics that are around my age (18). Even though I’m going through alot of spiritual struggles right now, it’s very encouraging to hear of people I can relate to. Even though I’m still not in full communion with Rome yet, my heart is Catholic, and always will be.
 
Yup, 16 years old. I have a strong calling to Christ. Im trying to discern my vocation, as I feel that I am being called to the Priesthood. Monastery’s right down the road lol. I can literally walk there. But God has provived me a amazing and beautiful Catholic girlfriend, so its conflicting lol. I have my Faith in God though, and He will help me and guide me.
Everyone goes through spiritual struggles. I also am right now as well. God will guide us and give us strength. He will not allow us to be tempted more than we are able. God Bless you Metaron!

SacredHeartFan, I pray that I have kids like you one day 😃 How mature and grounded in your faith you are for being so young!!

Salve!

We have a home shrine or altar in our living room: an image of the Holy Trinity (icon), a votive candle, two flower vase, white linen mantle, and Douay-Rheims Family Bible version, and we also have crucifixes in each bedroom.

All of the pictures posted so far are quite wonderful. They look terrific.

Next year, I will be able to construct an altar/shrine area in my apartment and can’t wait. Shall not be very large from my current estimation, but I’ll have to make due with what I can. I need to reread my lease and see if open flames are allowed, because I think a small censor would be cool to go with it.

One of my roommates just heard about Holy Water fonts, so I suggested putting a few up around the apartment.

I don’t personally have one (my Protestant family would freak out!), however I do have a random assortment of pray cards, a Rosary, by my desk. I would say what ever you think suits your needs.

Perhaps a picture of St. Micheal the Archangel. I happen to think it is so showing, that God is so powerful, that He Himself doesn’t have to banish Satan, merely one of his angels can.

Yes, shrine is the proper term. To have an alter would be heresy and blasphemy I think.
 
Wow, everyone here has such gorgeous places to pray! I’m actually feeling a bit envious. :blushing: Mine is just my bedside table and the shelves around my bed. I’ve got a few holy cards propped up, my Catechism and Bible, and candles galore. My favorite thing is my crucifix above my bed. I hope to make a prayer shrine in my own home someday, hopefully as beautiful as all of yours’.
 
I love Byzantine art the most. I would like to have a shrine, however I don’t know how my family would react?

Same predicament. I do have a large icon of the Trinity near my bed thoguh, which my brother refers to as my “Catholic offering” 😛

May I suggest as an alternative a pocket shrine? Use a matchbox or a small tin. I found it very useful—I can carry it around and meditate outside the house as well. I’m currently trying to do one on the Passion and the Stations. The last one accidentally had water dropped on it! 😦

That’s a good idea. I am thinking maybe I will just slowly build it up or something, so one day it will just be there. I already have a small one started, I have a few prayer cards. My family made fun of me, asked me if I was collecting.

When I was about 14 or so, one of my aunts gave me a poster-size print of the Divine Mercy Jesus. It was great, but my mom had the weirdest reaction. She said that she wouldn’t have that hanging in her house. Actually, I’d forgotten about how very weird it was. Usually my Catholocism amused them more than anything else. Anyway, I put it up on the back wall of my closet…That way I could see it, but she didn’t have to.

Consider it a badge of honor if they make fun of your devotion. Or an opportunity to share the Good News. 🙂

Your right, actually I have started constructing a shrine. I will fight for my faith. I don’t know where to start, I have some prayer cards, I don’t however have any large Crucifixes in my house.

Yes, my family often makes snide comments however about the sex scandals. That’s there main point to attack.

Haha. That makes three of us with a protestant family with weird reactions to shrines. My mom got kinda weirded out when she saw mine in my room, and out of respect for her feelings, I took it down. I’m picky about appearances, and something just wasn’t appealing to me about my personal prayer area anyway. Besides, what greater shrine than the Temple of the Holy Spirit in my heart? 😃

Holden- I’d reccomend respecting your family’s feelings about Catholicism. Your actions as a Christian will speak louder about your faith than any prayer corner.

AJV- the matchbox pocket shrine is a really cool idea. I might give it a try.
