Those are tiles with faces of children. It was a stylistic thing that particular builder did. It has something to do with the idea of a room never being empty. The parlor has one and the living room has three.

I have not had a priest over. Currently, the altar is not fit for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. I am turning the attic area into a chapel though and am going to rebuild the bottom of the altar so as to make that a possibility. Communion rail, etc. Everything. This temporary chapel currently has 2 bells in the attic that are rung from below. I like to ring the Angelus and ring them before set times of prayer. I will move them to the very top area of the attic after finishing the chapel area. This project may take awhile. For now, this provides a nice, quiet place for prayer.

That will be real nice! Do you ring the bells yourself, or do you have a timer that rings them? I wish I had a setup like that! I wat to get a small bell (handheld) just for the Angelus.

I ring them myself. I would like to get a timer mechanism and make it to where I have the option for both. I can swing both bells and also toll the big one. That mechanism is not hard to make. I say the prayer while ringing them. You can find you are meium sized farm bell or something that would work. It would involve drilling holes in your ceiling though. I have the ropes come down in a closet. You never see them unless you open it. That probably wouldn’t have flown in my parents’ house however. 🙂 A handbell would work too. You should be able to find one. Big ones are fun because you can broadcast it over the neighborhood. The chapel room is on the second floor on the area the jutts out in the back in that picture on the main webpage. There is a window right below the peak of the roof of that area that seems to be blocked by tree limbs in the picture. The bells are above that window and speak out through an attic vent. The sound gets out well.

I have a little altar set up on the fireplace with a statue of the Divine Mercy and Our Lady of Guadalupe along with a few holy cards and a rosary. I also have a little altar set up on my dresser with DH and my rosaries and a lot of holy cards/prayer books.

Mostly we just have things up on the walls and on shelfs all through the house. There isn’t one room you won’t find a few holy reminders in.

I’ve been thinking of where to put a little altar, but everything flat would end up with kitties walking on it at some point. They know they are not allowed on the kitchen table or counters, but everything else they feel they own, so all bets are off for something they can get on.

I do have two wall shelves though that I have not hung up yet, and I really want a prie dieu, so maybe if I put that under the shelves that might work. Hmmmmm - something to think about! 🙂

It’s been a lot of years since I’ve heard the Angelus bells. And buiding a chapel in your home with Communion rail…that’s AWESOME!! What you’re doing must make God so happy.

My home shrine is getting closer. I have finished my basement framing and am starting on the electrical. Now I am trying to figure out the lighting for my shrine. I am going to make a little inset alcove and hang a crucifix that I have from the holy land in it. I have started collecting some art : an icon of St. Michael, a print of Sanzio’s ‘Dispuatation over the Eucharist’, etc.

I need to figure out how to light the little alcove though… all the recessed lighting is too big. Still searching for some good accent lighting. Then I can start picking up some statues and candles for the shelf I plan on building below the alcove.

This shrine has been more motivating in finishing my basement than the ‘man room’ with new big screen TV 😉

Try those little round lights!

Try those little round lights!
Help me out here 🙂 What kind of little round lights? The smallest recessed lighting I saw was a 3" diameter light and I’m not sure how much bigger the housing would be. I was also looking at some LED lighting, which would probably require a step-down transformer 🤷

I am open to suggestions 👍

Like the dim king you see in museums above the paintings. Here is a link:

Praised be Jesus Christ!

Hello, I’m in High School too, and I also have a home altar.
This is a very beautiful thing. Many people, especially High schoolers, are falling away from the beautiful and grace filled historical traditions of Holy Mother Church. A home Altar is one of them, and it is good to see a fellow teenager who has one.

might I suggest a nice big picture to put behind your standing crucifix? My spiritual director gave me the crucifix he had on his desk in Rome and I put a picture of the Blessed Sacrament behind it.

I try to keep a votive candle burning on it when I’m at home

I hope that this helps…

I am in the process of making myself a home alter. I was wondering if any other Roman Catholics had one and how they set theirs up. I know I made mine of many different household materials. I’m only in high school, so I can’t afford much!
I’ve had one for the last several years. It includes a big, overhanging, Mexican crucifix, a Bible, chalice, a mock-skull, and a sword laying on top of the Bible. Everything sits on top of an American flag. The skull represents the mortality of Man, the sword, the defense of my faith, and the flag, Christian culture in America.👍

Wow this thread is resurfacing again. My mom and me are going to get started on a family altar and I’m working on mine to get it a little more organized so I will definately post some pics when we get done. We also want to get started on a Mary Garden in the backyard.

So nice to see this old thread dusted off! How is everyone?
Getting closer. Electrical is almost done and I expect to start hanging drywall this weekend.

I went out and picked up a nice statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus today along with an icon of Christ the teacher and a print of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. I have decided that I am going with all candle light for now 🙂 We’ll see how that looks. Have my eye on a mini chest for some blessed salt and some beeswax candles.

Have to pick out some fabric for runners - maybe one green for ordinary time and one purple for advent and lenten season.

So getting closer. 👍

Wow thanks for posting this!🙂 It has inspired me to make one at my house. I have some really nice eastern catholic icons, and a 1st Class Relic (St Anthony Padua).👍

This doesn’t count the dining room, the new large San Damiano Cross added to the cross collection we bought from the seminary I attended, our marian bedroom, etc. Very cool…my wife’s doing…she’s a convert.

Oh the prayer corner has a new different marian statue and a picture of Vironica’s Veil.

Wow, a first class relic…

In terms of icons, in the pics I posted the icon on the left is an original that was handpainted for me; the one on the right I bought in Bethlehem
