I don’t have an altar, but my room actually if you think about it resembles a church a lot. I have 8x10 icons everywhere, a cross, a crucifix, a Divine Mercy picture, a scapular, and 3 3 rosaries hanging on the wall. Yeah, my room is basically God-centered. I wish you all could see it.

Well, I don’t have an altar. But since I pray the divine office daily and work out of my home, I have a cell in my home that includes a bed, library, desk, armchair, and an oratory. The oratory has a prie-dieu, a plain wooden chair, a crucifix, an icon of the Blessed Virgin and a repro of a painting of St. Benedict (not visible in the photo, it is behind the photographer):

Here is what it looks like at Vespers in Eastertide, when I decorate it with flowers (could be Lauds too I guess!):

The icon of the Blessed Virgin has a small candle behind it. I light it when I chant the antiphon to the Blessed Virgin after Compline.

Being a Benedictine, I tend to keep it simple. There is a “vigil light” that illuminates the crucifix from the beginning of Vespers to the end of Lauds. God’s own illumination takes care of things during the day 😃

I have an altar in my bedroom. I have an amethyst cathedral (like a big rock cut in half and full of little glittery purple crystals) and I have that with a statue of Our Lady of Grace in front of it. A statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to the right, a crucifix to the left. Then to one side I have and Infant of Prague statue and a St Therese Statue. And a tealight holder and a few other bits and bobs - vigil candles and a plaque with the stations of the cross on it. It’s at one end of my bedroom and I love to light a tealight so that I can see it when I’m in bed praying the rosary. It’s very comforting 🙂

There are a couple of easy techniques that you can use to make your statues look a little more lifelike.
  1. Dry brush-- For the hair and the top folds of clothing, take a clean, dry brush and put a small amount of paint of a lighter shade. Brush off most of the excess then lightly go over the top of the strands of hair or beard and/ or folds of clothing going opposite the flow of hair or flow of the drape of cloth. On larger statues you may want to use more paint on the top folds.
  2. You can also use colored chalk to shade the face, hands and inner folds of clothing. I bought a set of artist pastels. I find the color that I want to use for shading and shave off some powder then use a dry brush to get in tight areas. Also a small foam painting edge brush works great. I dip it into the chalk powder then go around the hair line and creases of the face. Use a small brush to get into the nostrils and ear cavities. The foam brush works well on the large inner folds of clothing, too. When finished, you spray it with a clear, matte finish spray. Here are some examples in my slideshow.

Wow! What a big thread! I have been reading it for a long time now…watched it grow … but pictures are going down! Come on! Lets post more! 😃

Well, it looks as though this thread is dying out. I think we should all bring it back!
I have finally set up my home altar (more of a shrine) in my bedroom. First, I purchased a small bookshelf that is about waist-height. It has one adjustable shelf inside which works well. Above the shelf is a large, certified copy of the original image of Our Lady of Guadalupe purchased from the Basilica in Mexico City when I went there on pilgrimage two years ago. For Christmas a year ago, my mom had it professionally framed in a thick golden frame. Next to it are two rosaries; one is from the chapel of the Miraculous Medal in Paris and contains a small piece of the chair in which Mary sat when she appeared to St. Catherine Laboure, the other is a Guadalupe rosary. On the top shelf, directly beneath the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, is a statue of St. Juan Diego, kneeling, and opening his tilma exposing the image of Mary. Its about 12’ and I purchased it at a Mexican market here in town for only $25…it really was a great deal. Next to him is a rosary, scented with roses, from the Basilica de Guadalupe, still in its case. On either side of the top shelf are two white pillar candles, and in between those, on either side of St. Juan Diego, are two potted cactus plants. On the middle shelf are my most prized possessions. In the middle is a large St. Anne statue, educating Mary, and next to her, a framed holy card with a second-class relic (piece of her habit) of St. Rita of Cascia, one of my patrons. Next to it is a plaster statue of St. Rita. Behind her is a statue of Our Lady of Czestochowa, one of my favorite Marian images (after Our Lady of Guadalupe). On the other side of St. Anne is a statue of St. Jude (recently repainted by me) and a small vial of St. Jude oil. Next to this is a framed holy card with a third-class relic of Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Behind this is a large statue of the Risen Christ. There are also two framed pictures; one with a painting of St. Maria Goretti, the other a photo of St. Therese of Lisieux, with a second class relic (a piece of her burial shroud). But most importantly of all is a first-class relic of Bl. Bartolo Longo, still in its case. On the bottom shelf is my box full of Holy Cards (I have over 1,500), my Bible and prayer books, and a wooden box with various sacramentals. On a small table next to the shrine is a 24" statue of Christ the Good Shepherd, with framed angels looking on above him. Across my room is another shrine; it consists of a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe from Mexico, a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, and two holy cards, framed. One contains second-class relics (pieces of clothing) of Bl. Francisco & Jacinta Marto and the other a second class relic of Lucia dos Santos. I also have a life-size statue of the Divina Infantita (baby Mary) that I purchased in Mexico, and a very large statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Soon, I am getting a third-class relic of St. Anthony of Padua, a vial of miraculous St. Walburga “manna,” and something I’ve been waiting for…a first class relic of my patron Saint, St. Maria Goretti. Please say some prayers that these arrive soon!
I will try to post pictures soon. Thanks for the ideas. You all have some really wonderful shrines. 🙂

I was wondering if any other Roman Catholics had one and how they set theirs up.
Better late than never, I guess.

I have a small, two-tier table that was originally designed to be a sofa side table. On the wall above the table hangs a fishnet, and on top of the fishnet are icons. The central icon is the Bridegroom, with Not Made by Human Hands to the left and More Spacious than the Heavens to the right. Below these are three icons of my name saints, and small icons of the Transfiguration and Dormition of the Theotokos.

On the top tier of the table is a red wooden box with doors on the front. A brass censer sits on top of the box, and red candles surround it. The doors are open revealing Rublev’s icon of the Hospitality of Abraham. There’s also a tiny icon of Sts. Joachim & Anna at the foot of the box. On the lower tier of the table are mostly small icon cards depicting name saints of family members and friends, a sand bowl for small candles, a vase of dry flowers given to me by a friend, a couple of chotkis, and a New Testament. There’s a small rug on the floor for me.

Working on a home alter in our bedroom. Will post pictures as soon as it is completed. 🙂

My home altar is set up on top of my bureau. In the center I have a bronze metal cross and in front of it a crucifix from Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. On each side of the crucifix are two candles and the center a digital photo frame. To the left is a statue of the Virgen de Guadalupe patroness of the Americas. The statue is flanked by four flags: USA, Vatican City, the Philippines and Mexico. These are contained in a cubical glass vase. The vase is supported by four glass cubes with images of the sacred hearts of Jesus and Mary. Underneath those are a strobe light that illuminates the statue at night.

I love to see altars in every home and this is really a great thread! Keep it going…

Here are two pictures of my altar on a metal shelving next to my bed. It could be simple, no?

By the way, don’t turn your icons around if you’re thinking they’re tired of facing you or… don’t give them a shower every other day or two…:p:D (just kiddin’…)

That an 8’ by 10’???
WOW!!! You must be living in a castle or a mansion or some really big house, do you?:)👍

Here are pictures of my bedroom altar as of yesterday. New additions include a statue of Bl. Margaret of Castello and a relic of her, and the relic holy card of Francisco and Jacinta Marto. Enjoy.

Guadalupe 1531,

The pictures didn’t show up…
Here’s what you can do. Try it. It’s how I uploaded mine.🙂

1.Re-size your jpg images to 1024x768 pixels (not in inches) to shrink it a little bit then save it or save to another name.
2.Go back to your post and attach the re-sized jpg images (copying or using insert didn’t work for me) by browsing/locating where you saved the images. Make sure you don’t exceed the allotted max MB size.
3.Hit upload and close the window. You’ll see them as attached thumbnails.
I hope it works.👍

well, like i said, i used mostley household materials. I turnd a shelf on it’s side and put a white pillowblanket over it. this has a crucifix on a stand and two white candles on each side. then under that, i have a stool with a blue towel on it. this has a statue of our lady of grace. then I printed a circular mosaic of St. Michael the Archangle and taped it to a plate which is on a gold stand. i just wondered if anyone esle did anything different. I hope to have a picture of it tommorow after mass.
You have done it very good, try to get some Holy Water too,you can ask any priest at church to bless water in a bottle for you. Bless yourself every day, making the sign of the cross, saying with this Holy Water, and your Precious blood dear. Jesus wash away my sins. Holy Water is very good to have it protects from evil, protects you too from harm,it is good to bless round the house to with it. I am sure Jesus and Our Lady will be very pleased with your alter, and you will be blessed for thisGod bless you,and stick very close to Jesus and Mary for without them we are lost and have nothing. They love us more than we no,and are so happy when their children you and me pray to them.

That is very beautiful, your alter. I have not set mine up yet properly 😊,this has reminded me to hurry and get it done.

I am in the process of making myself a home alter. I was wondering if any other Roman Catholics had one and how they set theirs up. I know I made mine of many different household materials. I’m only in high school, so I can’t afford much!
I made mine from a shelf. On the top level, I keep a statue of the Sacred Heart and of the Immaculate Heart. On the second level, a Divine Mercy Image and the Prepetual Help Image. On the third level, a small statue of Saint Katharine Drexel and a box of holy items. In front of the shelf, I have a short table where I put candles. Then in front of that, I bought a kneeler. Beneath it all, I have a yellow and white blanket that I made into a carpet. On the wall, to the left of the shelf I have a relic of the Holy Face, and to the right I have a Crucifix. You know those screw-on hooks? I put some of those on the edges of the shelf and use them to put palms, it looks pretty nifty. I used to have a collection of relics that I inherited and a statue of Divine Mercy and a really good Ecce Homo, but they got stolen when I moved (the movers stole it, it was a horrible ordeal and I can’t replace those things; the police didn’t even do anything about it; those were the most precious things I had – don’t ever use a company called Mahalo Express if you’re in Hawaii).

A good inexpensive thing you can do is print out images with a good-quality printer. Be sure to have one of the Divine Mercy (if you don’t know about it, do look it up, it’s fascinating, Jesus Himself directed that this image be made by Sister Faustina, who was declared a saint in 2000). Try the palm branches too, it’s coming up in a month. And take some holy water from the church after the Easter Vigil – it’s supposed to be unusually special compared to holy water blessed at regular times.

Let us know how you decide to set things up! Maybe you’ll have good ideas for us as well.
