My dad built the altar (mensa), and I have an altar stone in the center.

I have looked through all 47 pages of this thread and I’ve loved the variety shown on these ‘home altars’/ shrines. I am now thinking of creating one for myself 🙂 Just got to find some space to put it, lol.

Back when I was a lurker, I loved to look (or, rather, ‘lurk’) on this thread because I loved the many pictures of the beautiful shrines that were shown. It inspired me to create my own, and I finally did a few days ago!

It consists of an Our Lady of Grace statue (pictured), which sits upon (artificial) rose petals, and at the base is multiple (artificial) roses; the roses are to represent Our Lady’s Assumption, as her tomb filled with roses and lilies after she had been assumed by Our Lord. On top of the roses, there are two (silk) calla lilies, which are to represent Our Lady’s purity. Leaning against the center of the statue, I have a small (not too small, but not too large either) Crucifix. On the sides of the shrine, I have Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of the Rosary, the Divine Praises, and the Holy Family prayer cards; off of the white pillow case (I didn’t have anything else :o) I use as a base, I have a St. Mary Magdalene prayer card. I hope to get Holy Water, as well as Lourdes water. I plan to take a picture of my “shrine” and share it on here (in fact, I planned to share it on here when I first thought of the idea, and I was still a lurker then); when my mother first saw it, she said it was “just beautiful.” 😃
 
This is my altar but this is in my room I also have one in my living room
This altar has St Anne, the Divine Child Pope John Paul II with a piece of his cassocks,Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Our Lady of Lourdes, St Michael, Our Lady of Fatima, Virgin of Guadalupe, St Joseph, Pieta, St Anthony, The Black Christ of Esquipulas whom I am Very devout he is from Guatemala, then the Pictures some you can’t see Infant of Prague, St Markell, St Rita, Rosa Mistyca, Providence, and a St Christopher And Virgin of Mercy and Immaculate Heart but you can’t see them and the picture you see above is Our Lady of Candelaria from my hometown of Jucuaran in El Salvador. Hope you like it.

Click on the image to see a bigger version; it is not in that high quality because, as my camera was dead, I had to take the picture with a cell phone. The statue and the crucifix contrasted with the colors of the roses and lilies is beautiful to see in person.

This one shows the full scope of the shrine area. I built it in a nook that’s built into the wall of my room.

Detail of the center. This is a shoe box with some cloth laid on it. Yellow is my favorite color and I happened to have a large yellow hankie, so I put that over the bottom cloth. This gets changed out for red during the Christmas season with some added greenery. The “window” and angel were Confirmation gifts and the Holy Family was a Christmas/birthday present from my parents to replace the old Wal-Mart Nativity piece I had before. The medal in the middle is from St. Martin’s Cathedral in France and has the original French prayer.

This is the Marian corner. It has a statue of Mary I bought at the shrine of Our Lady of Good Help on Saturday, a French prayer card showing the mysteries of the Rosary, an image of a window from Our Lady of the Mountains in Colorado, a rosary I received for my First Communion, and a candle that no longer gets lit now that it’s on the new shrine.

This corner holds some gifts from my First Communion. The prayer book is for children but I still like to use the guide to the Rosary because the pictures are extremely helpful in focusing on the meditations of the mysteries.

And this is my mirror, where I keep my Rosary that was blest by Pope John Paul II.

I love that first communion doll! It’s so adorable!
 
I have my own altar at home. There is a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and a standing Crucifix. There is also a rosary and a picture of St. Dominic and a small picture of St. Jude. I also have an hourglass on the altar for which I use when I want to send a long time praying.

I enjoy burning candles, on my “home altar” during prayer but especially for scent and ambience. Recently I started burning incense in my room now and then; I have a lot of Byzantine and Orthodox decor mixed in with some Latin Rite items, and the incense adds to that atmosphere. Yesterday, however, I was doing some housecleaning, and I happened to look UP…I don’t know why I wasn’t expecting the smoke damage! :eek: 😃

I have switched to a low-smoke, high-fragrance brand of incense (by “Herb and Earth”), but I suspect that it will also cause damage to some extent. I almost don’t want to repaint…:rolleyes:
 
I have a small shrine as well, atop the smaller of my two bookshelves, which is covered with a white lace table runner. In addition to my Bible, prayer book, and rosary, I have statues of Mary and Joseph, a St. Joseph holy water font, and some framed paintings – that’s Benjamin West’s Ascension front and center, and beneath it a smaller version of Francisco Rizza’s Immaculate Conception and a prayer card I found containing St. Anthony’s Brief. I’m quite fond of it, and it was all surprisingly cheap to put together – the paintings are just prints I pulled offline and had done up at the Wal-Mart photo center. 🙂

Thanks, it was a gift from my grandparents if I remember correctly.

Unfortunately my bedroom altar has been dissembled since I went to college and I’m currently trying to figure out the logistics of setting up something in my dorm room. I have a box kind of like the original set up on my dresser, but I don’t really like the placement because there’s other things on the dresser. I’m considering setting something up on a shelf in the “closet” (more of an opening in the wall with shelves) and I think this would make it a little more private. I think there’s a couple pictures on here of dorm room sized altars, so I’ll take a look at those for inspiration. 🙂
