I saw a lot of great images of Home Shrines/Prayer Corners in this thread. to all the people who posted thank you for, inspiring me. I’m currently on the finishing stages of setting up mine. Here is how it looks like as of this posting

My soon to be completed Marian Prayer Corner

as you may have observed it will a Marian Prayer Corner. 🙂

I’m having the Crucifix blessed on December 25, and the Image of Mary Help of Christians on January 1.

The crucifix definitely completes your prayer corner.👍
And it has changed a lot from when you started.

Wow, whole new room! 😃

Slightly off topic…I’ve inherited a statue of Mary with baby Jesus, aside from being very dusty, baby Jesus seems to be missing the halo or rays from the back of his head. Where can a replacement be found? Mary has an old crown and a halo with 12 stars. I was hoping to have those replaced, too. Thanks for any online links of where to find these items. It was made in Spain

I would really like to make myself an Home Altar becouse of the beauty of it.
I’m a convert however, and I have to say that for me as a former Lutheran it feels quite wired to have an altar at home.
This issue of mine is yet another issue I have to work my way through.

I do live with my parents who are Protestants and I can’t see them embracing the idea of an home altar dedicated to Mama Mary (I love Mary so it would’ve been having a strong Marian focus) anywhere except from at my bedroom.

And I am indeed a sinner, I would feel blasphemic if I woke up with a morning wood for instance.
I have this feeling that I’m not worthy of having an altar at my home at least not at my bedroom that is.

You are a child of God (and His Mother :D), you don’t need to worry about being worthy. And its kind of hard to sin without your consent. Sometimes, stuff just happens.
Maybe you would be more comfortable with the idea of a “prayer corner” rather than an “altar”? Just clear a bookshelf, a little table or the top of a dresser and put a favorite little statue and maybe a crucifix with a couple of interesting objects or candles; maybe you could find an image of Mary holding the Child Jesus if you think this might be less likely to bother your parents. You could use the area to store your rosary, any scapulars, holy water, blessed palm leaves…

What many call an “altar” is actually a shrine or a prayer corner. It is very traditional to have a section set apart for prayer and devotion even in the bedroom. Many of the saints themselves had holy images and statues where they slept. 🙂 Regular bodily functions are not blasphemous. 😉

Indeed. What many forget is that there is a great difference, also, between the altar in the church and a prayer corner, as Zekariya put it. The primary difference is that the one at church has been consecrated, signed with holy oils that have had an epiclesis performed over them and regularly bear the Body and Blood - whereas the one’s at home are simply a place for daily retreat. Nuanced distinctions and rarely touched upon in today’s catechesis, but nonetheless very important I think.

Although I am not Roman Catholic, I hope it is not minded if I share the set up of my corner: on a small table I have a St. Thomas cross in the middle with an icon of St. Michael of the Apocalypse (striking Satan on his horse) on the left and an icon of St. Isaac the Syrian on the right - I picked both icons because there are constant reminders of what I need to pray for (i.e. fighting Satan and obtaining internal silence). I have a hand censer in front of the cross, with my book of offices to the left by St. Michael. I like it because it’s simple and not distracting.

I reduced my “home shrine”. It had become an all consuming thing. So I cut it down to size.

I traded my candlestick set to my local parish for two burial plots. So now my home shrine has to do with a trimmed down set. Trying to get some beeswax candles next. Then I’ll polish up the brass followers and it’ll look a lot better. 👍

Deo Gratias!

The statues in my prayer corner(Mary Help of Christians and Our Crucified Lord) was blessed last Dec. 25. Did a simple enthronement for Our Lady during Midday Prayer, Yes I pray the Liturgy of the Hours now in my Prayer Corner. The Lord indeed provides. Hallelujah! 🙂

here’s my instagram photo after Evening Prayer for Dec. 26

too bad the Sampaguita withered quickly due to humid weather around Metro Manila since Dec 25

I feel blessed :getholy: 🙂

Wanted to share how my prayer corner looks right now for the Christmas season

In my culture (hispanic) we have el Niño Dios (God Child). On Christmas eve, we lay him in the manger and everyone gives Him a kiss and gets a bag of candy. Then, on the 6 of Jan. we eat the Rosca de Reyes, which is a sweet bread. Inside, there is a miniature Baby Jesus. Whoever gets the Baby Jesus has to make or buy an outfit for the Niño Dios and make tamales for the 2nd of Feb. It is an awesome tradition 😃

Leaflet Missal sells some nice crowns. Other than that you have to buy crowns and halos from religious stores in Spain. They have website but their items are expensive.

Yes, prayer corner is a good way to phrase it. I am encouraging my faith formation kids to set up a corner of their room (nightstand, shelf or even a drawer) to be the place they can go in quiet to pray to God and worship Him in a special way. I brought in pictures of my prayer corner and they were all eager to look at it. I decorate it according to the natural seasons as well as the liturgical season as well. I also change out my Rosary beads that hang from my cross, keep a small Bible on top and have a statue of Mary and a picture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I place prayer cards and or pictures of family, friends or neighbors that have died and pray for their souls.
