An altar is a item where a sacrifice is made.

Would what you’re asking for, be called an altar, or a shrine?

Its a great idea. I made an Icon corner(shrine) though it is not in a corner, a mixture of Eastern rite and Latin rite. I have on the wall Icons of Christ the Teacher,(Byzantine), on the right and Theotokos on the left(Byzantine), above a book case that has table top Crucifix. To the left of the crucifix I have a framed autographed picture prayer card of JPII and I have figurines of Mary, Christ as the Good Shepard, St Joseph, St Therese of the Baby Jesus, and the Holy Family. And three candles representing the Trinity. Between the Icons I have a framed copy of Psalm 23 with holy cards lining the frame. A little cluttered but I like it.Bennie P ><>

This is our home altar area. We kicked the TV out of our living room and replaced it with this 🙂 I’d like to make an altar cloth for it, but with a toddler in the house, I think it’s easier to do without it for now.

I think you are meaning a prayer space or sacred space - an altar is not in the home.

I used to have a small corner prayer space where I would kneel and pray before leaving for work in the morning. My ex thought I was bonkers (hence the “ex”). I really enjoyed having it and have considered doing something like that in my home now, maybe in our very large bedroom - my DH and I live in a bungalow and the entire upstairs of the house is our bedroom, so there would be some space there.

The space in the ex house was just a small table with some small statues on it and I think I had a crucifix as well. I had a small candle and some holy water. You hardly noticed it if you didn’t really look.

Hmmmm - will have to think on this some more.

OK, I’m not real good at uploading but, I have an “icon corner” that is actually a bookcase with the top shelf removed.

On the wall above, an Icon of Christ Pantocrator
On the top of the bookcase, the glass containers from seven-day votive candles- one of the Virgin of Guadalupe, one of St. Michael the Archangel

Then in the actual boockase, center, small icon of Christ, the Good Shepherd. To the left (my left, His right), the Annunciation, then on the inside left wall, the Crucifixion, and a holy card of the Hodegetria. On the right (my right) A large icon of St. Michael the Archangel, below that, a smaller icon of the Guardian Angel. Inside left wall, St. George, and a holy card of St. Raphael, the Archangel.

In the center, a large blessed Bible decorated with a rosary. Left corner, a picture of the Virgin of Guadalupe framed in a seashell, with my grandfather’s rosary draped over it. In front of the Bible, another large shell with a 20 peso note and some 10 peso coins I got on a vacation in Mexico, the pyx with my hair that was cut at my chrismation, and a rosary draped over the whole thing. Right corner, a bottle of holy water with a one decade rosary draped on it, and a seashell I’m using as a font.

Next shelf down, on the left, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, St. Nicholas on the right. In the center, a smaller bible that I use in my daily devotions stood up against the back wall, in front of that, my prayer book. There’s another rosary draped hanging from the corner of the cover of the bible and resting on the prayer book which lies right in front of the bible.

Next shelf down, well, it’s pretty much my religious books, and also a small cedar chest containing various religious articles, another candle of the V. of G. _scented candle, I don’t burn it because it irritates my sinuses, and my be toxic to my pet birds, and the glass holder of a votive candle for St. Jude.

My icon corner also has a substation- basically a small, narrow shelf that 's supposed to be a CD/Video stand. I had some holy cards, a picture of the V. of G. fighting the Serpent (very cool image) and rosaries left over after I got the actual icon corner up and running.

My motto, if a thing is worth doing, it’s worth overdoing.
