We recently had our home enthroned (the family is enthroned, the “house” is just the house…) to The Sacred Heart of Jesus and The Immaculate Heart of Mary and are very happy about it. As time goes on we are beginning to see real fruits in having placed Christ as the head of the home; I think it is helping me to grow as a husband and father in tremendous ways. The Sacred Heart image we are using is the “Sic Deus Dilexit Mundum” image, and the Immaculate Heart image is one I stumbled upon whose origin is just as elusive as the “Sic Deus Dilexit”, but it is besides the point I guess.

Anyway, I am just excited and wanted to share. I’ve always understood that Christ is our head in our household, but actually making physical space in the home to prove it seems to make a real difference for us. It has been since January 30th. We set up a small altar attached to the wall above a smaller table, and a Crucifix above that, surrounded by some relics we have received over the years. It is neat to see how the children treat our living room now, and the absence of a television has been a non-event since we never used it anyway.

Praised be Jesus Christ!

The Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart as given by Our Lord to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque

*1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.
  1. I will give peace in their families.
  2. I will console them in all their troubles.
  3. They shall find in My Heart an assured refuge during life and especially at the hour of death.
  4. I will pour abundant blessings on all their undertakings.
  5. Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
  6. Tepid souls shall become fervent.
  7. Fervent souls shall speedily rise to great perfection.
9. I will bless the homes in which the image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and honored.
  1. I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.
  2. Those who propagate this devotion shall have their name written in My Heart, and it shall never be effaced.
  3. I promise thee in the excess of the mercy of My Heart, that its all-powerful Love will grant to all those who shall receive Communion on the First Friday of Nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die under My displeasure, nor without receiving the Sacraments; My Heart shall be their assured refuge at that last hour.*
For in depth explanation of these 12 promises, see Fr. Joseph McDonnell S.J.'s excellent reflections at Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Archives.

I guess that I, still living with my parents, have a bedroom enthronement. I have a little altar set up with a large Crucifix and statues set up. 🙂

[Sophomoric joke about men and toilets]

Seriously though, I don’t believe I’ve heard the term.
I believe that “Home Enthronement” is when you make a place for Jesus [And Mary] in the main gathering area such as an altar:

What is ‘home enthronement’?
One of many websites that can explain it much better than I can is:

www.enthronement.org

We printed off the prayers for the actual enthronement plus those we pray (one nightly consecration and then the others depending on the situation) and our Priest led as the celebrant, but the head of the household does the majority of it. We also have a certificate that we and our Priest signed to commemorate the occassion.

Basically you consecrate you home to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts and have images blessed and displayed in a special place that becomes your family prayer room and a home altar. Certain prayers, plus the attendance of First Friday Mass (for the Sacred Heart of Jesus) and First Saturday Mass (for the Immaculate Heart of Mary) are part of the enthronement. Not all parishes offer a First Saturday Mass, so I would guess you attend the vigil Mass and then pray the Immaculate Heart devotional prayers afterward on your own. Our parish offers both, including the devotions, so it makes it easy (aside from getting the children ready for 3 Masses on “first” weekends).

I’d post a pic of our altar and display, but I don’t think I have enough posts to have that permission yet.
