Rome, May. 14, 2008 (CWNews.com) - Police in Rome have removed a group of 25 homeless people who were living in a Vatican security tunnel, the newspaper Corriere della Sera reports.
The group, made up on natives of Poland, had apparently found ways to make themselves comfortable in the tunnel, tapping into electrical circuits to power televisions and refrigerators.

I suppose they could have been posing a security risk since they were in a security tunnel. I hope and pray that they have found better homes even if that means living in a home for the homeless. :signofcross: :gopray2:

I hope that there is a Catholic Charity in Rome that found suitable housing for them in the meantime. Security still must be maintained. Harsh as it may seem overall…besides a tunnel is not a suitable means of housing for anyone.

The Missionaries of Charity have a mission inside the Vatican. If the homeless want shelter, they can get it there or elsewhere, at another mission in Rome, rather than tap into electrical wiring to run their TV and regrigerator.

Beggars in Rome are artists. Very clever and somewhat engaging. I slip a euro to the old ladies whose station is in front of churches. The tunnel near the Holy Office to the Fornaci was filled with women and children when we were there last year, and while I am sure the women loved their little ones, they used the tykes to good effect. Getting them out of the tunnel was a wise move.

I agree. A tunnel is not suitable housing for anyone. I just hope that they were able to find better housing somewhere. Hopefully a Catholic charity, as you mentioned, took care of them.

Maybe the Missionaries of Charity took care of them. I certainly hope that either they or some other Catholic charity took care of them.

That may be the case with this tunnel, but I think it would depend on the tunnel in question. For instance, I think the abandoned Superconducting Super Collider tunnels in Texas are spacious and secure and could easily be domesticated a bit to make them quite comfortable.
