The most expensive food is the stuff that you throw away, so have a plan for everything you buy.
I find shopping from a list to be my best money-saver, even if the items buy aren’t on sale that week. Buying what I know we’ll actually eat and avoiding impulse buys is so important. I also avoid buying the largest container of something if I’m not sure we can go through it before it goes bad.
Some big bang-for-your-buck items are:
eggs
chicken thighs
canned salmon
frozen vegetables
bananas
corn on the cob when in season (it’s practically free here in the Midwest)
block store brand cheese
dried beans
rice
corn tortillas
oatmeal
pasta
