Hello,

I am currently in the process of debating if I want to homeschool or not. While looking through the curriculums of various Catholic homeschooling programs I have noticed the lack of computer science. So far Seton is the only one that has some form of programming and keyboarding class.

So my questuion is…in the homeschooling world, is computer science treated more like a music/dance or sport (soccer, baseball, etc team) class? Meaning you’ll have to go to an outside source to learn about the subject. I hope that makes some sense…

To be perfectly honest, most people who homeschool don’t use one curriculum alone. The first few years they might to get their feet wet but usually it’s a combination of curriculums. Personally I don’t know of any computer science curriculum but doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I have been doing some research on Catholic homeschooling programs recently, specifically programs that have online classes for high school students. I don’t recall seeing any computer programming classes in the core curricula of any of the programs I looked at, though one or more of them might offer programming as an elective (I’m not sure). One thing you could consider for a high school student would be to have him or her take a programming class at a local community college. That way, he or she learns some programming in high school, and earns some college credit at the same time.

Click on hugh school and you’ll see it listed there on page 16 I think. I know it is before the list of english requirements.

Anyway, your suggestion on using college courses during high school is brilliant. Thank you! I’ll keep this in mind!
