I have one like that! She will whine for 1/2 an hour and then get the work done in 5 min. Drives me nuts!
You are doing a great job! It sounds like he is plugging along! You need to see how bad it can get elsewhere. This faze won’t last forever! Culture what interests him and don’t get too bugged out when he pushes your buttons. Your probably really entertaining when your mad!
Get DH to help!
If all else fails the Dollar stores sell Legos in small packages for like$2, !! There’s no shame in a little bribery if it buys you peace of mind.

I’m sure I’m quite entertaining when I’m mad

I just ordered an online math program. He seems to like it- hopefully it lasts. I think it’s helpful that he only sees one problem at a time, so it’s less overwhelming.

The one problem at a time thing may well help enormously. I remember feeling really intimidated by a page of problems; it seemed huge and insurmountable. Same things with writing essays and papers and other assignments. It wasn’t until college or thereabouts that someone explained to me how to eat an elephant: take it one bite at a time! 😃 Learning to tackle a big project in bite-size pieces, even just one problem at a time, is a very useful long-term life skill for certain brain types, too. Even as a SAHM, I find myself feeling overwhelmed by everything I need to do in a given day, but if I break it down into very small steps (“I’m going to empty the dishwasher. Okay, now I’m going to eat some protein and drink a cup of coffee. Now I’m going to fold just one load of laundry.” etc), I can get most of it done without stressing myself or the kids unduly.

One thing homeschooling teaches us is an incredible amount of patience. I’m not perfect. One of my kids struggles with math sometimes too. It can be Agrivating!
1 hour passes and you go to review the sheet and it’s not even half done!

But we must regroup. Obviously there needs to be another way to appoach it. One thing I did last year was have a special " tutor" night where my kid and I would go to Starbucks just the two of us and have hot chocolate and catch up with the math.

Have you thought long and hard about this child’s particular learning style?

For instance, is he a visual learner, an auditory learner, a kinesthetic learner, linguistic learner, logical, social, solitary, etc.? These are identified learning styles of children. The beauty of homeschooling is that you don’t have to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Yes, children need discipline and structure, but he is a 9yo boy with learning problems. Maybe a math worksheet is not the best way for him to practice math 🤷 At this age, math facts are really what need to be drilled and this can be done in a variety of ways. We have several math games that my 8.5yo girls love to play. I would HIGHLY recommend utilizing games and programs such at Math War, Math It, Rocket Math (app), and Life of Fred books.

I highly encourage you to not get too distraught over this. Don’t turn math into an all out war of the wits, either. Short lessons and review (no more than 20-25 mins a day) at this age is enough. Bring back history and science, too, and by all means make sure you are reading TO him as well. Our best moments of homeschool happen when we are totally engrossed in a great book 😉
