But the horses are kept for the people who go out to the rural area to ride.

It’s not a horse boarding situation, but a horse riding stable. If not for the people who go there, there’d be no need to have horses and they probably couldn’t afford to keep them anyway.

Horse boarding means boarding a horse owned by another person.

In this particular situation I’m not sure. They don’t have a tractor of their own. A neighbouring farmer comes with his tractor to do the heavy stuff such as deep ploughing, but I’ve seen them use their own horses for lighter work on the fields and once when i was visiting I accompanied them on a trip into the forest on a cart with two horses and we loaded it up with firewood that they had stacked up there the previous year.

Without the horses, the whole concept wouldn’t really work. They would need a tractor and in contrast to horses, a tractor doesn’t generate income from riding so it might well be more costly than what they have now, as well as being less romantic…
