Hola!

I’m taking an intro to Moral Theology course, and am really struggling with it. Already. sigh I’m to write a paper on the “True Nature of Conscience”, and give examples of various combinations (See below). The book uses the analogy of a pilot and his navigator, and I am NOT GETTING IT!

Anyone willing/able to help a girl out? And, no, I’m NOT looking for someone to do my stupid homework for me, but rather maybe put things into different words, and brainstorm with me, allow me to bounce stuff around…

Here’s what I’ve got so far (using sex as an example, because, well, it’s easy and I’m not feeling particularly original right now)

d. Give original examples of the following:

i. True and good conscience: Jane has an accurate understanding of human sexuality and understands that abortion is wrong, and chooses to have and keep her baby.

ii. True but bad conscience: Jane understands the Churches teaching regarding human sexuality, and knows that non-marital relations are wrong, but engages regardless

iii. False yet good conscience: Jane was brought up in a standard, relativistic American household and was brought up with the idea that “Sex is nice, and pleasure is good for you”, thus having a disordered view on human sexuality. She engages in relations with her partner, ignorant of the theological implications.

iv. False and bad conscience: Jane has rejected all things Catholic, becoming an angry athiest. Yet, every time she passes a Catholic church, she crosses herself.

Okay, y’all…am I sort of on the right page here?

I’m not getting the terminology exactly as the way i learned it (thank you St. Thomas!) is that conscience is similar to a spark of truth and as such is always acts for the truth[ordered for the good], but yet it can be deceived by false (name removed by moderator)ut, smothered to the point of near irrelevance but never killed or it can be ignored but is never simply true or false.

My different terminology aside I would say your first example, of someone acting in accordance with an informed conscience is a good one, as is the second of someone choosing to act against their informed conscience and so that which they know to be wrong.

The third one I think is a bit trickier and is probably closer to no. 4, while i think your no. 4 is closer to a no. 2.

Number 3 is a bit tricky as you are wanting to give an example of someone who does not posses an informed conscience yet does not act against the natural moral law or would not do anything thought to be wrong. I mean between husband and wife “Sex is nice, and pleasure is good for you” but the being convinced by society of the ‘normality’ of extramarital actives may come under ‘False yet good conscience’ but I’m not sure of the book you use and its examples. what is it?

Only my opinion but, I may do it closer to this:

i. True & Good Conscience: Has an accurate understanding and believes in the Churches teaching regarding human sexuality, and knows that non-marital relations are wrong.

ii. False yet Good Conscience: Has an accurate understanding of the Churches teaching regarding human sexuality, but engages in non-marital relations with guilt.

iii. Jane was brought up in a standard, Athiest household and was brought up with the idea that “Sex is nice, and pleasure is good for you”. , but questions marriage and religion.

iiii. Jane was brought up in a standard, Athiest household and was brought up with the idea that “Sex is nice, and pleasure is good for you”. She engages in relations without questioning marriage or relegion.

I just realized that I never said thanks to the folks that helped (both here and in PMs)! I’m so sorry, I got busy and completely forgot. I’m very grateful for the time you all took to help! That unit was really challenging for some reason, but I managed to get a ‘B’ on it (though, I think perhaps he was overly generous…)!

Thanks again!
