Last week my priest briefly spoke about the end times. I’ve been going to mass for a long time and this never gets discussed. Does your priest ever talk about the end times, demonology, or the antichrist?

I wonder why priests avoid these interesting topics.

My priest has talked about the end times in the sense that we won’t know the day or the hour. So we shouldn’t let not knowing that consume us to the point of fear but we should also live a Godly life since we don’t know; after that it’s a trust in God’s mercy and that we have tried our best.

As for demonology and the antichrist, not a single homily on those and I’m thankful for that. The study of demons and the antichrist are topics that can really lead people down some strange paths (the end times too, but that’s a topic that’s a bit easier to speak in broad terms for in a homily) and are topics I’d rather people tackle with one-on-one direction from a spiritual director instead of trying to learn anything from a homily at mass.

I wonder the same thing too.

We’re getting close to Advent, and the Church (at least the Latin Church) focuses on the second coming of Christ as well as His first coming, so maybe that’s why he talked about it.

I talk about the end a fair bit, particularly when the readings lend themselves to that. I talk about how the end of the world refers both to the general consummation of all things as well as the end of our own lives, and we must be vigilant.

That said, I don’t think it’s fair to presume that priests avoid preaching about it. It’s just that there are a lot of other things to preach about too.

mine talk about it when its relevant from the scripture readings

Never ever. The extent it would be discussed would be to assure the attendees that it’s all a metaphor.

At the end of the Church Year, there’s usually a reading from The Book of Revelation. I’ve heard passages in recent years that proclaim that prominent geological features will be dissolved. Another in which the angels were told to do no damage to the geological features until the seals were affixed upon the chosen.

Perhaps we were hearing the Children’s Readings.

We had one today, concerning the three comings of Christ. The first one, when He came to live among us, the second one, when we admit Him into our hearts, and the last one, at the end times. He then asked how many of us were ready for that?

It was an interesting homily, from a newly (this past June) ordained young monk. His delivery still needs a bit of polish but the content was solid teaching.

The Gospel reading of the First Sunday of Advent raised the topic, and the priest mentioned the coming of the Son of Man. However, he did not get into all the prophecies, apparitions, and private revelations about events and signs preceding his coming, which some of my Catholic friends are somewhat fixated upon.
