Hi,
I attended a daily mass on Friday ( I should do this more often, I know ) and I noticed our pastor skipping right from the Gospel to the prayers of the faithful. Is it ok not to have a homily? When I went in the States a few times, Father always did a short one.
Peace!

I think it’s OK not to have a homily at daily Mass. We always have a short one, though. But we go straight from the homily to the Eucharistic Prayer. No prayers of the faithful or creed.

The GIRM says that homilies are required for Sundays and holy days (#13, 66). It “recommended” on other days, especially during Advent, Lent and the Easter Season (#66). Thus, it may legitimately be omitted on weekdays.

I trust that the Preparation of the Gifts is not omitted. The homily is not mandatory on a weekday. The Gloria and Creed are not recited except on Sundays, Feasts, and Solemnities. The Gloria is not said during Advent or Lent with a couple of exceptions.

I go to daily Mass a few times a week. We rarely ever have a homily, if we do its because our regular priest isn’t there. The daily Mass where I attend is downtown at noon, a lot of people don’t have time on their lunch breaks to sit through a full Mass. I think its wonderful the way it is, actually its perfect.

Although much shorter in length, the homilies we get during the week are absolutely the BEST.

Sunday homilies, as good as they are, tend to be more on the line of “feel good-story telling” with a bit of Church teachings thrown in for good measure.

Daily on the other hand, is All teaching. I understand the Gospels far better and the teachings of my Church. Daily Mass has helped me grow more in my faith then a “month” of Sundays have.

To be fair though,Daily Mass is attended by a rather small group of mostly retired folks where as Sunday Mass is across the age spectrum. i can’t imagine how difficult it must be for Father to week after week formulate a homily that will appeal to ALL age groups.

We used to have a priest who could say daily Mass in 15 minutes. It always seemed like a race. The priest we have now says homilies at every daily Mass and Mass now lasts for 30 minutes. And he often sings in the sacristy after. It’s obvious he loves being a priest!

Our priest gives about a 30 second homily at Daily Mass. He reads it from a booklet so I’m guessing it’s a pre-written one he must get through somewhere. They aren’t bad for being so short. I wish they were longer though…

We get one. Mass lasts about 35 minutes. 👍
**So do we. Homily doesn’t have to be long. I guess it just depends on busy your priest is (to take the time to prepare it). Sometimes it’s about the Saint of the Day’s life, or re-touching on the readings from the weekend masses.

Visited a church one weekday and getting ready to have a nice cozy seat to hear the homily (after working 10 hours on my feet), and they didn’t have one! 😉 . And the rosary after that weekday mass was said in record time. Mass and rosary within the half hour.**
