Homily on Impurity - An audio recording

Hi All,

I wanted to get some feedback on a homily recently given at my parish, by Fr. Eduard Perrone (use the January 15, 2006 clip). It is recorded and available in MP3 and WMA format. There is a quality problem (echo, babies) that likely won’t be there in future recordings because I’ll be tapping right into the sound system with my digital recorder.

Going through the first two readings, and the gospel may help. I was able to find them here for January 15. I think the homily was appropriate for this set of readings.

I hope I can get a fair number of volunteers to listen to the roughly 15 minute clip and to start a discussion surrounding the conent. Some of my interests include, but are not limited to:

1. Did you find the content surprising, coming from a priest?
2. If yes, in what way? For example, does it challenge you spiritually or does it turn you off?
3. When was the last time you heard a homily of this nature? Was it in your parish? A retreat or seminar?
4. Would you like to hear more topics like this from the pulpit?
5. If more audio homilies were posted from Fr. Perrone would you be interested in listening?
6. If you don’t mind, please list your age or age group.

Please don’t limit yourself to these questions. All comments and thoughts are welcome. My parish is dabbling in uploading audio files. So, this is experimental at this time.

1. Did you find the content surprising, coming from a priest?

No, not at all. The priests in our parish have been preaching on the dangers on impurity for years. This sin is SO pervasive that it needs constant attention.

We need to recognize this and not tolerate it. We MUST constantly pray to overcome it and seek forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconsiliation.

I think this answers questions 2 & 3 as well. BTW, I’ve attended several retreats dealing with this issues. One of which was by Ken Henderson. He spoke to the men of our parish about his battles with impurity (pornography, etc). It was excellent. Ken is a Catholic apologist that gives these talks. Here is a link to his web site:

Yes. Absolutely. I think we need to hear this over and over again (much like we need to hear about the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist over and over again).

I am a 38 year old man (with a wife and two kids).

Sensuality is probably my root sin (although Pride and Vanity are very close too). I have battled with impurity for years. It is a VERY serious issue and one most don’t care to recognize or talk about, but the truth must be told.

I always rejoice when I hear a priest talk about subjects that are rarely spoken of from the pulpit. Education and exhortation with regard to chastity needs to be ongoing.

We have a retired priest living in our parish who is not afraid to speak on controversial subjects. He is soft-spoken and speaks in a way that instructs without being uncharitable. Several months ago when he spoke regarding abortion, someone walked out in the middle of his talk. But, there were many who thanked him after Mass when he was outside greeting parishioners.

About a month ago he spoke about living together before marriage, - how prevelant and how wrong it is. Again, he did a fine job. He shared privately with some of us at a study group that a couple had gone to see him who disagreed. They felt that as long as they “loved each other, and were true to each other, and were going to marry eventually” that it was okay.

A new much younger priest came to our parish recently, and I was surprised and happy to hear him promote “Theology of the Body” from the pulpit. He leads a ministry to the Catholic youth that go to a nearby secular university. He has a great reputation among them and they seek him out for his leadership.

This should be the norm for priests, especially to discuss these issues that are so misunderstood even by Catholics. They need to hear these things over and over again, as they are hearing the view of the “world” over and over again.

1. Not at all. I was surprised that such a wonderful priest existed, but what he preached is what we ought to expect from our pastors.
2. I think his phrasing was very charitable. But since I am convinced of what he talked about, I wouldn’t have taken any offense about it!
3. Hmm, that’s a hard one. A talk specifically on purity, that I didn’t seek out (i.e., listening to CDs of Chris West, etc.) was probably a few years ago at a Mass by the FSSP.
4. YES! This is what our world needs.
5. A podcast would be awesome. I actually read this one, because I wasn’t sure what material he would cover until I read it (and didn’t want something unknown coming out of my speakers), and then I knew what he said.

I had trouble focussing on the audio so I went and read it instead. The feedback was very distracting, but the content was excellent.

1. Somewhat, yes. It’s not something I’m used to hearing every week. It’s the kind of homily we ought to be hearing more often, but sadly many don’t.
2. It’s only somewhat surprising because I don’t hear it every week.
3. I can’t seem to recall the last time I heard a homily like this. Evidently it’s been too long.

Thanks for sharing Fr. Perrone’s homily, I enjoyed reading it. I’ll be looking forward to more.
