Modern Catholic Dictionary:Hi I was wondering if anyone can tell me what homily is ?

Yep. This is what I was taught. It is my understanding that only priests or deacons give homilies. The clergy of other denomination give sermons.…It is different from a sermon in that a sermon is about whatever Scripture or topic the preacher wishes to preach on. In a homily, the priest or deacon explains the meaning of the day’s Scriptural reading and applies it to our lives.
I don’t know that some other denominations don’t have homilies as well but the attraction of the mega-church phenomenon is a sermon. My family are all Evangelical and I have attended some sermons that are amazing. I’ve seen a good preacher whip out a 40 minute sermon on as few as 5 or 6 words from the Bible. I didn’t agree with most of them but you have to admire a guy who can keep 3,000 spellbound with his wit and personal magnetism!Yep. This is what I was taught. I suppose that could be.I don’t know that some other denominations don’t have homilies as well but the attraction of the mega-church phenomenon is a sermon. okay. I was just curious. welcome home.@thistle it says catholic / baptist because I go to a baptist church and going to leave soon to venture out into the catholic church . It’s a long story anyway thanks
I am under the same impression you are. We do not have a “series” at Mass they way the Evangelicals do at their services.I suppose that could be.
Also, the modern Catholic dictionary indicates a homily is the same as a sermon. It appears things have changed because I was taught differently. I was taught that a sermon is about whatever Scripture or topic the preacher chooses to preach about, and in a homily, the priest or deacon specifically explains the meaning of the day’s Scripture.
