I am very concerned about some of the things I have seen going on around my campus the past year or so and was wondering if anyone had any (name removed by moderator)ut or suggestions. Just to let you know, I attend a Catholic, Jesuit university. One of the organizations on campus is called “Allies.” Their mission statement, directly taken from our school’s student-organization website, reads:

Allies seeks to offer support to students that are interested in issues that concern gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. Our mission is to plan speakers, trips, and activities that will promote a better understanding of the gay, lesbian, and bisexual population within the teachings and doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church. Furthermore, we hope to promote Christian teachings by advocating the importance of acceptance, love, and tolerance of all people.

I would have no problem with the organization if they lived up to their mission statement. If “Allies” resembled a Courage-type organization, I would strongly support it. But the statement above is very misleading about the group. This past week was supposedly “coming out” week. All around campus they put up signs and wrote on sidewalks that homosexuality is normal and it is nothing to hide. Their signs–which were posted throughout our academic, administration, and residence buildings–included images of men kissing men and females kissing females. The signs boasted that “1 out of 10 people are gay” and then questioned readers if they might be homosexual or bisexual. To make matters worse, some signs promoted the fact that famous figures (Madonna, Elton John, Alexander the Great), are/were gay or bisexual–so what could possibly be wrong with homsexuality?

I am appalled. One of the reasons I came to this school is because it is a CATHOLIC university. I understand that many professors these days are rather liberal, and I further understand that the Jesuits (with exceptions) often are not the best at promoting orthodox views of Catholic theology. But come on? Does this not sound ridiculous and utterly inappropriate on a Catholic university?!

If anyone has experienced anything like this at their own school, or if anyone has suggestions for what might be done, I would greatly appreciate them. Does Rome do anything to ensure that schools that claim to be Catholic actually promote and teach the truth Catholic faith? Is there someone to write to or speak to? Again, I am not against homosexuals, but I am against behavior that is clearly immoral in the eyes of the Catholic faith.

Thank you for your help! God bless!

That 10% figure came from the terminally flawed “research” by Kinsey. The true figure is closer to 3%.
The advice to contact the Newman Society is solid.
College theology professors are supposed to have a mandatum to teach from the local ordinary and have signed the documents of ex corde ecclesia, but that doesn’t apply here.
In my experience, most of the Jesuit colleges, most named “your city” University are so full of dissident Jesuits and lay professors that the adjective “Catholic” hardly applies any longer.
Fathers Fessio and Pacwa, both Jesuits and both absolutely faithful to the Magesterium, sadly admit that their order is currently undergoing real problems and they’re doing what they can to improve the situation. Remember, Fr. Fessio was a student of then Father Ratzinger.
There are good, solid Catholic universities in the United states, and most of them are very, very new. The study by the Register, also cited above, is a good resource.
You could always write the bishop, but even if he wanted to do something, there isn’t much except to declare the school no longer Catholic.
You may get a bunch of posts reminding us that the “Jesuit” universities aren’t really owned by the Jesuits anymore. So what? They still administer them!
Good luck!

Your school sounds just like mine. I attend an Augustinian University, and I always say it’s in the tradition of St. Augustine alright- Before *his conversion! *It’s pretty bad, my school just had “coming out” week too. It’s sad to see a school lose such a treasure- It’s truth in faith. It’s also very hard to illicit change when there are so many slippery characters about trying to “modernize” the college. The best advice I can give is to pray for your school, pray for its conversion. Also, you could start your own club devoted to truly Catholic interests and education. That would do a lot of good. I’m thinking about starting a Divine Mercy Chaplet Club on campus. It’s hard to be religious in college. I know, it gets lonely sometimes, but don’t give up! 🙂

I graduated 2.5 years ago from a Franciscan College & went back to my alma mater last week (I visit regularly). I saw a GLBT group there promoting coming out week via a rainbow display in one of the display cases. A friend who still goes there told me there was another one in the library as well as a meeting there with members of the group. I was shocked. BUT, when I was there, I was a co-president of the Pro-Life Group. There has since been a PRO-CHOICE CLUB!! I think it failed, but, that creedence would also be given to this issue AT A FRANCISCAN SCHOOL!!! I think at one point, there was a VERY very very very brief Young Republicans Group with one or two (maybe not even) meetings, but, they weren’t allowed to stay a group as there wasn’t a Young Democrats Group. …Apparently this doesn’t bother anybody in the university (the gay thing)…OR, the people it bothered at mind were laughed at and ignored by the powers that be (which is VERY possible…)

I can’t really offer you any advice, what’s already been given is probably great and should keep you busy for a month or so.

But let me encourage you and say I’ll remember to pray for you and the situation!!

And at the risk of sounding politically incorrect… I too would be disgusted at seeing signs with those pictures on them, that’s the equivalent of “Let’s promote sin!” “Famous people X, Y and Z are sinners, what could possibly be wrong with sin…?”

BTW, I like much of Elton John’s music, but the sexual orientation, nope!!

Likely the campus activist organization started out well intentioned, but eventually run astray to where it is today.

Get a bunch of copies of Pure Love from Catholic Answers and distribute them.

That’s quite true. And the fact that the 10% figure continues to be endlessly repeated makes it more of a recruiting tool than anything else.

There is a renewed push among homosexual activists to infiltrate religious groups. This email came out today from HRC which is the nation’s largest homosexual advocacy organization.

Dear Friend,

It’s easy to be angry when…

…the Vatican instructs Catholic Seminaries to look for “evidence of homosexuality” in seminarians and priests.

…pastors in West Virginia and Massachusetts are ousted by their churches for supporting GLBT rights.

…a child is expelled from a Christian school because her parents are lesbians.

The truth is, religious fundamentalists are controlling the conversation about values in America. And right now, it is only getting worse.

The Human Rights Campaign is done with being angry about the hateful actions of so-called religious leaders. And we’re done with letting them do all the talking. We’re launching an unprecedented campaign to “change the conversation” with our new Religion and Faith Program. Will you help? Click here to make a contribution to take the program from a plan to reality.

The Religion and Faith Program is best described by a conversation I had earlier this year, when I began crossing the country to talk about equality. When I spoke with a legislator from a heartland state about marriage between same-sex couples, he said, “Joe, I am ready to help you. But you and I will get nowhere if we can’t start really talking to the people in my state, and talking to them in the language of values and faith. Until you can do that, we won’t make a difference.”

When I returned to DC, we got back to work. It wasn’t easy - but we were determined to start changing the conversation. You see, for many of us at HRC, religion has not been a source of solace but, rather, a place of rejection and anger. But we’ve had to put those powerful emotions aside in order to work with courageous, fair-minded faith leaders from all walks of life to put together a plan for this program. Every day the need for this work becomes clearer. And here’s what we’re doing, with your help:

Finding and promoting the many equality-minded faith leaders like Bishop Gene Robinson of New Hampshire, Dr. Susan Thistlethwaite of Chicago, Bishop John Selders of Hartford, CT, and Rabbi Denise Eger of Los Angeles. It’s time we heard their courageous voices in the media to counteract the closed-minded sound bites of extremists like Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and Fred Phelps.

Creating preaching guides and resources about how to talk about GLBT equality with congregations, and then putting them in the hands of pastors, priests and rabbis who are hungry for this help. They WILL preach fairness if they have our help.

Under the leadership of our new Religion & Faith Program Director Harry Knox, we are working closely with individuals and groups who attend temples, churches, and mosques across the country, people who are changing their religions from within. They need our materials, our strength, our support. They need to know that HRC members are standing with them.
This program is the most important campaign that HRC has launched in a long time - and we’re doing it on top of our other critical work. Please help us hit the ground running with the full force of HRC’s membership - make a contribution today. Click here.

I am personally so excited about “changing the conversation.” I hope that you are, too. I believe this is the right strategy to fling open the doors of our nation’s churches, synagogues and mosques, and to open minds and hearts as well. Thank you in advance for your support, once again.

Warmly,

Joe Solmonese, HRC President

Did they have a permit for all those anti-Catholic signs and painting sidewalks? I could see the irony of a Catholic school prosecuting Catholic tuition paying students for defacing and removing anti-Catholic propoganda on the campus. This might be more publicity than the school administration would want. :hmmm:

Confront the administration of this university. Get an appointmenet with the Dean or Chancellor or whoever is in charge and demand that they stand up for Catholic teaching.

And, start looking into schools to transfer to if they will not do something about this group.

First off, thanks for everyone’s replies. Even if not much can be done, I appreciate everyone’s prayers and concerns. And yes, the group did have campus approval for their signs and sidewalk writing. Last year, some students removed all of the organization’s signs from campus. Those that were caught were sanctioned. I understand that campus policies should not be violated, but it should also be a campus policy that the Catholic faith is taught on campus.

I have discussed the situation with some students and several faculty who are truly committed to the faith. Hopefully we can find the initiative to bring the situation to the attention of the administration. Again, thanks for your prayers and encouraging words!

God bless.

Yes, God forbid we should let the gays feel accepted and have happy lives like the rest of us. What is this world coming to?

I remember when I grew up knowing i was gay in Catholic home. Everytime somebody talked about the 'moral evil of same-sex marriage being pushed" or “that terrible boy who brought his boyfriend to the prom”…I just looked deep down inside and thought how much God must hate fags to deliver them unto a world like this.

cheers.

Tradition, Family & Property - select “Student Action”

TFP has active young adults that went to campuses protesting same-sex “marriage.”

I have a wealth of information because last year at my child’s high school, the Gay Lesbian Alliance - in 4,000 high schools - sponsored the Day of Silence.

The Human Rights Campaign used to be run by my former state senator Cheryl Jacques and the current head, Joe Solemnese, grew up two towns from me…so I’m very familiar with this sort of rhetoric in good ol’ Massachusetts. Our resident liberal Jesuit college is Boston College which has been having a similar set of problems as the original poster. What can I say? They’re true dissenters and are scandalizing thousands of young Catholic college students. Our bishops and hierarchy need to be courageous and do their best to put a stop to this nonsense!!

John 14:15

“If you love me, you will obey what I command.”

1 Corinthians 6:8-10

8Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers.

9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Being homosexual may not be a choice. Being an offender (gay) is.

God loves us all.

But he doesnt force us to come to Him.

Lord, help us all.

You seem to look at yourself and think “I feel this way, and cannot help it- therefore it must be right and everyone else must be wrong”. Please at least try to see where others are coming from- even if you don’t agree with them.

I am sorry you thought God hated you- whoever gave you that impression did or said something wrong- that’s all there is to it. God doesn’t hate you- but he never promised you that your life would be without trials or temptations, or that everything about you would be as it should be. Check out www.couragerc.org. There is information on the website, including some member testimonies. There is also a listserve you can join.
