Hi all,

I have a question regarding someone having a homosexual friend. A person who is very, very close to me and who is very dear to my heart has acquired a freind who happens to be homosexual. This friend is very nice but nonetheless a sinner being they are homosexual. I try to tell the person I am close to that it is wrong and not to get so close but they don’t listen. My question is simple: Will my friend be considered a sinner because they are so close with a homosexual? If so how can I try to save my dear friend from that fate?

Thanks so much,
Joe

We are all sinners. If it were a sin to get close to someone who sinned, we’d wouldn’t be able to have any friends.

There’s nothing wrong with having a homosexual friend provided that the friendship is non-sexual. If it’s an occasion of sin or scandal that’s a different matter.

Someone on another topic said “we tend to be scandalized by those who suffer temptations we don’t have”.

Love the sinner, hate the sin, but be careful, lecturing to the sinner may backfire. As the same poster said it is far more effective to instill a love for the Church that Christ founded, than to scold the sinner and turn him off the Church. For if one loves the Church one will attempt to mend his ways.

Thanks for the reply…Their relationship is not sexual being they are of different sexes and the one is homosexual. I see your point as well…lecturing is not always the best policy. I have to learn that lesson seeing as I tend to lecture a lot.

The mere fact that someone is homosexual does not make that person “a sinner”. Homosexual sexual activity is sinful (and so, for that matter, is heterosexual sexual activity outside of marriage), but the mere fact that someone is homosexual is not sinful. Note what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:
2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

As noted, being homosexual does not make one a “sinner”. It is not sinful to be friends with a homosexual. It is also not sinful to be friends with sinners generally. If you truly thought that no one should be friends with a sinner, then you should expect no one to be friends with you, because it is almost certain that you too are a sinner in some way. Frankly, telling your friend to have nothing to do with someone merely because that person is homosexual sounds a great deal like the “unjust discrimination” that the Catechism tells us to avoid!

Well I know for a fact that this person does not abstain from sexual activity. And I didn not tell my friend to completely sever all ties from this person, simply to not get as close as I see them getting. I know that just being homosexual is not a sin and I also know that we are all sinners in some way, shape, or form.

That’s true! Just being human is sufficient to make us a sinner 😉
Not so. Adam, Eve, and Mary were all human beings, yet their humanity alone was not sufficient to make them sinners, and each enjoyed sinless humanity at least at some point.😃

I would recommend that all on this thread watch this video regarding persons with homosexual tendencies, and how to relate and minister to them.

There is (usually) nothing wrong with being close to someone who is committing (sexual) sin. If anything, it could greatly help that person to lead a chaste, fulfilling life.
Wow…Thank you very much for sharing that video. I watched all eight of those videos and they made a lot, a lot of sense. Although I did not agree with 100% of everything, I’d say most of what he said was very true. It actually helped me a lot…in many, many ways…thanks for sharing! :clapping:

"As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. 10 And as he sat at table in the house, **behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples. **11 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “**Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” **(Mt 9:9-13)

Being with sinners is beautiful, as long as you are a Witness to Jesus Christ & are not afraid to stand up for the Truth!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!
