Ive seen, heard and read alot lately about all of the homosexual priests in the church. And it brought up alot of questions. Such as, does it make a gay priest a hypocrite when he has to teach that homosexuality is wrong?.. And would our sins In confession be forgiven if the priest is gay?.. Also, if we need to be free from mortal sin to recieve the Eucharist, how can a gay priest give the sacrament to all of us unless he were forgiven of his homosexuality? Which I assume could be a mortal sin, seeing how often it’s mentioned negatively In the Bible.

Maybe the answers to these are easy. But I’m just a believer, with alot of questions and confusion tring to find my way to where I belong in Christianity.
Thanks in advance

does it make a gay priest a hypocrite when he has to teach that homosexuality is wrong?
As far as I am concerned the issue is not who the priest is attracted to, but whether he is being chaste. If he is not pursuing homosexual relationships he is not being a hypocrite and I believe may be a powerful example to his parishioners.
And would our sins In confession be forgiven if the priest is gay?
Yes

Again, the issue is not the attraction, but if he is acting on it.

@Imazombie1 , it is not sinful to be gay .
Sometimes the word “gay” has other meanings besides one’s sexual attraction. If someone wore a hat 5 years ago “Make America Great Again”, nobody would say it is in any way political.

Likewise, if someone in 1965 wore a shirt that said “I am a Pro Choice Woman”, people wouldn’t think this controversial at all.

It is better to say “person with same sex attraction”. No sin in that. But “gay” now has possible connotations of politics, right to marry, and scandal.

The validity of the Eucharist does not depend on the priest being in a state of grace. So long as he intends to consecrate the Eucharist, uses the correct matter and form etc, then the Eucharist is valid. If a priest is in a state of mortal sin, that is his issue to sort and go and receive the sacrament of Confession. But it doesn’t affect the validity of the Eucharist.

And simply being a homosexual (attracted to the opposite sex) does not necessarily mean the priest is in a state of mortal sin, so long as he remains chaste.

Homosexuality is not a sin. But priests do not have to be sinless, Christ is the One who gves us the sacraments through the actions of the priest. If the bishop has ordained / approved him, and the ritual is performed properly, you can trust in the generosity of God.

Mercy is from God.

Probably not. A gay priest has probably struggled for much of his life with his homosexuality. Sometimes he will preach the evils of it more forcefully than others. Sometimes he will be more merciful. He will have all the conflicts that any other sinner would have, perhaps including hypocrisy. Trust in God who uses saints and sinners to carry his Word.

But shouldn’t he abstain from receiving the Eucharist if he is in a state of mortal sin, lest he commit sacrilege in front of everyone, and God Himself? Maybe sacrilege doesn’t invalidate the whole Communion for everyone else, but it’s got to be some bad juju I would think.

There was a post on facebook that linked this article

The article has no references. Foiled. The article says that the Vatican issued a policy statement (for lack of a better word) in 1961 (the last upside down year until 8008, perhaps) asserting that homosexual men should not be ordained to the priesthood.

Whew!

Does anybody know what Vatican document the author is referring to AND can share it here?

Persistence paid off. Here’s the answer to my own question:

If he had committed any mortal sin, of course he would want to avail himself of the Sacrament of Confession immediately. It is not a mortal sin to have an inclination, however, no matter what the inclination is. Men who have such deep-seated inclinations to mortal sin that they are unlikely to be able to maintain chastity ought not be ordained, but that does not mean that every inclination is so deeply-ingrained as that.

“Bad juju”? The Eucharist is either valid or it is not and while I believe a priest should be in a state of grace before celebrating Mass, if he isn’t then that is his issue to address, it doesn’t effect the validity of the Eucharist. If it did then how could any of us be confident that we are receiving a valid Eucharist (or Confession) ever?

I meant it was bad on him. That wasn’t the greatest choice of words I used. I would hope that a priest would hold himself to at least as high a standard, as to those he preaches to.

Priests are human like the rest of us, with the same flaws we have

No it doesn’t. Gay just means homosexual. Any other meaning you attribute to it is on you.
I remember back when it didn’t mean that.

I think you could have basically closed the thread after this one. Great reply Elf.
