First I am asking why homosexuals have taken to referring to themselves as “gay”. You can read many vintage books and there is no hint in the context that gay in anyway is related to being homosexual.
The Online Etymology Dictionary traces the use of “gay” as an adjective with homosexual overtones back to the late 19th/early 20th century. But yes, “gay” as a noun doesn’t seem to appear until 1971. etymonline.com/index.php?search=gay&searchmode=none
Second I cannot understand why any person would go around and intentionally making public what their sexual exploits entail.
I am not sure what you mean by “what their sexual exploits entail”? Do you mean that they routinely and publicly describe the sex they had? I haven’t encountered this.
If one knows one is a homosexual because they are acting it out it should remain a private matter that one might discuss with a confessor but not advertise to all they come in contact with.
This sounds very consistent with Catholic teaching, and Catholics should pay attention to it.

I think euphemisms are a waste of time. They work for (maybe) a couple years, but the cultural baggage of the old term eventually catches up to the new term.

Thanks for the link about the origin of the term gay.
I reminded my older brother that my parents used to use phrases like so and so is cracking up from the lack of shacking up. Or if one dose not feel well it is because they are not getting enough. many decades latter I realized how dehumanizing these assertions are. So i made that point to him. He promptly replied well they were just joking then went on to tell me the validity of the errant assertion that if you are not sexually active enough you could become insane or physically ill. I am amazed by looking at the lives of my nine siblings how destructive a wrong attitude about sexuality can have.
