Let it first be known that I am completely against homosexuality. And that I don’t care what anyone says there is no such thing as gay marriage, maybe gay rings and gay sexual interaction but they are not presenting themselves under God so it is not a real matrimony.

My question is what is all the nonsense that I am hearing about people being born homosexual? I believe that this Bible verse would prove that it is completely not true.

“The Lord God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; this one shall be called woman, for out of her man this one has been taken. That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become on body. --Genesis 2:22-24”

I got that out of a Catholic Teen Bible. And then I go hearing things about animals being homosexuals too and I really want to know what in the world all of this stuff (nonsense) is about.

Please and Thank You:)

People are NOT born gay. There is no such thing as a gay gene and there is no medical or scientific evidence to even hint or suggest there is.
People become gay through one or more of upbringing, evnvironment and choice.

Even though there may not be any full blown scientific evidence that one can be born homosexual, there is no right to discard the idea.

And it’s plain obvious today that many people ARE born gay. There are many individuals who have stated that they were gay from as soon as they started being attracted to others. And other individuals clearly state they have always felt as if they were in the wrong body.

But yes, people can also gradually become gay through upbringing, environment and choice as thistle posted.

While there are multiple examples pointing to upbringing , environment, personalities contributing to Same Sex Attraction there is also some evidence of biological factors as well.

It doesn’t really matter unless you are looking for a treatment. People are born with all kinds of disorders that might lead them to have disordered thinking or emotions. They need to be helped to live a life in opposition to those disordered emotions, impulses or thoughts.

I bet if science were to actually separate a gene, it would only apply to a small fraction of those who are in homosexual lifestyles. Which would then require counseling for a gigantic proportion of the gay population who thought they were gay, and now science says they are not.

In the same vein that homosexuality is hereditary, so is poverty, alcoholism, and child abuse.

This is something I’ve always wondered: If it was determined that same sex attraction is biological or genetic or whatever, and at the same time figured out a way to fix it, how would that be received by active homosexuals? Yes, they were “born that way”, but so are people w/ down syndrome and others w/ mental retardation, as well as some blind and deaf folks, hemophiliacs, etc. Even pedophiles can say the same thing. If we had cures for all these conditions, people would be lining up for them. Since homosexuals claim they would change if they could, as their lives are so terrible, would they really? That would answer the “choice” question once and for all. Unfortunately, this isn’t likely to happen in my lifetime, if at all.

In Christ,

Ellen

Ask a married man if he could choose to love another man as he does his wife. He will say no. The choice question is answered (assuming we are talking about the choice of which gender you are attracted to). Really, the only question that remains is environmental push/pull factors, genetics, or both?

I can assume from reading the previous posts that you all are heterosexual. I don’t think you can possibly imagine how insulting and hurful these statements are.

I hope that nobody close to you is a homosexual, and I really hope that none of your children are. It’s difficult enough living your whole life knowing how different you are from everyone else, insinuating that we chose it or worse yet that the parents and family that we love caused us to be this way is another burden to add to it.

The Church herself has said that the reasons that people are homosexual are unknown, which is why she encourages compassion in dealings with us. There is scientific evidence that strongly suggests a biological component and the Church recognizes this. There have been a number of studies on brain size, thought process, even which hand people write with-all of which lead to at least some biological component. It will probably be another generation before we know for sure, given how slowly science moves.

I completely agree with this post. Especially your last sentence.

Well said, graceandglory! 👍

I’m with the Church: we don’t know what causes homosexuality.

I have had many gay friends; most of them told me that they “always knew” they were “different.” One of them was “seduced” (his own word) when he was only 8; what chance did he have to be normal? Most of my lesbian friends were sexually abused by men when still children; what chance did they have to feel “right” about men? Yet, some of my friends were not abused as children, and tried to be straight without success.

My point is that I have anecdotal evidence for both sides.

I believe that homosexual sex is wrong, as is any sex outside of marriage (which is exclusively for a man and a woman).

I believe with the Church that SSA (Same Sex Attraction) is disordered - and I welcome anyone that has it into my life. I live in a cow town now, after growing up in a large metropolis, and I feel kind of incomplete with only all straight, all white friends!

My anecdotal exeperience is more to the genetic side than the environment. I have friends with straight siblings, friends from rich homes, poor homes, religious homes, non-religious homes-the only friend I have that has abuse issues is not gay, nor is she in any way sexually promiscuous. I guess that’s why I view the whole environment and choice arguments with such skepticism. I even have friends who were raised by gay couples, with a natural parent who is gay yet they are straight.

Just from my own experience, I was raised in a Catholic household, went to good Catholic schools and was never abused or neglected. From the time I can remember, I knew I was different from the other girls, I didn’t act like them, I didn’t dress like them (when I had a choice) and I wasn’t interested in any of the things they were-but I was interested in them when they were getting interested in boys. I’d rather spend a Saturday watching baseball than the Food network, would line up for Iron Man but run screaming from Sex in the City and spending a day at the Mall trying on clothes…well, let’s say I’d rather be yanked out of an airline window at 35,000 feet.

I don’t feel that I chose any of that, and that the only thing I really have a choice in is whether or not I act on my orientation.

No one is born gay. That is the left promoting their agenda. They try to create a parallel to being born Black or Asian. A person may be born who has a proclivity to a certain behavior. But, behaviors are controllable unlike the color of one’s skin.

I wonder if Jeffrey Dahmer had a gene that made him a mass murderer. Or if Hitler had a gene that made him hate Jews.

Every man and woman has a free will to choose the manner in which they will conduct their lives. And this chosen manner is chiefly demonstrated by their chosen behaviors.

We are all called to rise up and live a holy life pleasing to God. It is quite apparent that God made man and women sexually compatible.

I will continue to pray for all those struggling with the affliction of same sex attraction, but I can never condone the physical promiscuity associated with the gay lifestyle.

I agree with cargau.

God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. And I don’t “hate” homosexuals I just believe that they are wrong and would be very uncomfortable if I had a lesbian friend and nervous that she may have feelings for me… it would just be weird. I don’t associate with my friends gay parents because they give me creepy looks that make me uncomfortable.
God aloud us to be born w/ the freedom of choice. And all the things about a girl being molested and then never liking guys… okay listen. I was molested when I was young and after that my mother never let me go near any males for almost 4 years… But i didn’t decide hey well because this guy hurt me I can’t like the gender at all, thats plain stupid. I can understand people being afraid after that and not wanting to associate with guys but that doesn’t automatically make them gay, they would have to experiment with it, and the experimenting part is just as much of a mortal sin as actually becoming gay.

I am going with the Church on this.
…Sacred Scripture condemns homosexual acts “as a serious depravity… (cf. Rom 1:24-27; 1 Cor 6:10; 1 Tim 1:10). This judgment of Scripture does not of course permit us to conclude that all those who suffer from this anomaly are personally responsible for it, but it does attest to the fact that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered”. This same moral judgment is found in many Christian writers of the first centuries and is unanimously accepted by Catholic Tradition.
Nonetheless, according to the teaching of the Church, men and women with homosexual tendencies “must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided”. They are called, like other Christians, to live the virtue of chastity. The homosexual inclination is however “objectively disordered” and homosexual practices are “sins gravely contrary to chastity”.

In those situations where homosexual unions have been legally recognized or have been given the legal status and rights belonging to marriage, clear and emphatic opposition is a duty. One must refrain from any kind of formal cooperation in the enactment or application of such gravely unjust laws and, as far as possible, from material cooperation on the level of their application. In this area, everyone can exercise the right to conscientious objection.
Considerations Regarding Proposals to Give Legal Recognition to Unions between Homosexual Persons
-His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI writing as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

Also, the Catechism:
Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.” They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved.
2358 The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial. They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God’s will in their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord’s Cross the difficulties they may encounter from their condition.
2359 Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection.

No one is born gay.
This topic has been debated and debated on CAF and here you guys have had the answer the whole time. I guess it’s settled then? 😉

It would seem some within the Church tend to disagree with the Church. (See above)
I will continue to pray for all those struggling with the affliction of same sex attraction, but I can never condone the physical promiscuity associated with the gay lifestyle.
Your prayers are very much appreciated. The question I tend to have when viewing this debate is why some people are so against any evidence of a biological basis for homosexuality. Would undeniable proof of some people being born gay mean that one has to “condone” homosexual acts? The answer is no. So why does it seem as if some are so quick to denounce / deny ANY biological evidence at all?

Peace!

Even if some of the people who are homosexuals or who have some other form of sexual deviancy were indeed born that way, it does mean that normal or natural.

Schizophrenia is not normal or natural. Yet, people are born that way.

We see many other types of mental and physical birth defects. If some of those who suffer from sexual deviancy do so from birth, that is yet another type of birth defect.

Not to go off topic, but they currently believe that you are born with certain genes that predispositions you to be schizophrenic. However, it is necessary for the environment to trigger these genes for you to actually become schizophrenic. To my knowledge, this is the current belief.

FitSwimmer, you are certainly an argument for a congenital predisposition!

The funny thing is that there’s very little difference between you and me, I, too, “didn’t act like them, I didn’t dress like them (when I had a choice) and I wasn’t interested in any of the things they were” (with the exception of the Beatles & Beach Boys); and I’d for sure “rather spend a Saturday watching baseball than the Food network!” (Go, Rockies & Red Sox!)

I wanted to be a boy - but it wasn’t anything like sexual - it was because they got to have all the fun.

That’s probably why I have found it so easy to be friends with Lesbians - we have a lot in common!

It wasn’t until I was in my late 30s that I began becoming more traditional, doing crafts and becoming interested in “home and hearth,” so to speak.

May God bless you with the strength to choose celibacy. If you think you’d like to talk with me further, please PM me!
