Homosexuality is learned.

As a psychologist and someone deep in theology, I believe homosexuality is learned. I believe that Satan seduces certain children from and early age with temptations involving the same gender. As the child grows older, they intuitively feel as if they were born homosexuals, but the real culprit is Satan.

The same is true with heterosexuals who become hyper-sexualized from an early age with sexual promiscuity. It’s all the work of Satan and the desires lay deep within them…

Respectfully, I disagree.

There are simply too many homosexual people who were brought up in good and virtuous households with parents who did all the right things.

If you are deeply theological, you will recognised the CCC which states that the psychological genesis of homosexuality is not understood.

To propose that a child growing up and discerning themselves to be homosexual is doing so as a result of Satan (in those bold sorts of terms) will only promote despair.

The Church doesn’t propose this. You shouldn’t either.

It is tempting to look at things like homosexuality through this kind of lense though. It is a kind of simplification. It could be that it is an imperfection of the flesh though. We are taught that the Spirit and the flesh at are war with each other. I would probably be more supportive of this theory in cases where the attraction is unexpected. Although there are probably homosexuals who select males because they have a desire to dominate males. Could be a number of reasons why homosexuality exists. It probably isn’t the same for all people.

That doesn’t make sense to me Robert. Why would a non-homosexual be tempted by others of the same gender? To be tempted requires that temptation to be attractive, which it just wouldn’t be unless we already had attraction to the same sex.

It’s more likely to be physiological. If we see Satan as an image of temptation then temptation may lead people to indulge in certain activities, but temptation can’t make me attracted to other men - I’m just not wired that way.

I don’t think it’s helpful saying that anyone attracted to the same sex has been seduced by satan. To be honest it’s statements like that that make me sympathetic to those who want to tightly regulate any “treatment” for those with same-sex attraction. They are demonized by society quite sufficiently already without somebody telling them that they were seduced by satan as a child.

We have become a sex-saturated nation and world since the 60’s. Artificial birth control began the slippery slope of the sexual “revolution” with the lie that women would be able to be “equal” to men if they were allowed, by use of artificial birth control, to have sexual intercourse with whomever or whenever they so pleased. This was the “first step” of the ladder in the evil one’s plan to annihilate souls. It has worked brilliantly.

Once artificial birth control had been accepted and considered the “norm”, the next rung of the ladder had to be reached: abortion on demand. When one considers that there have been more abortions than all of the dead in all of the wars since the U.S. began, that should sober us up a bit. But, the next rung of the ladder is the acceptance of homosexuality as normal. I just read that there is a move in some public school district where teaching homosexuality and other depravities is going to be introduced in kindergarten…KINDERGARTEN.

I don’t think that anyone can determine definitively if homosexuality is gene-linked or just a behavior learned from the environment–although I’ve read studies on twins that the environmental element has much more influence than the gene-linked suggestion. The point is that all of these questions and theories are a smokescreen. The bottom line is that regardless of our personal sexual proclivities, we are called to live chaste lives. To engage in sexual activities outside of the marital bed is just as sinful as one who engages in homosexual activities. We have become a world where the new religion is called 'INSTANT GRATIFICATION". When a suggestion is made to public school officials or other professionals that chastity be taught in schools as an alternative to sex education, it is met with howls of indignation at such a ridiculous antiquated idea.

The idea that we should somehow take steps to curb our passions and our desire for instant gratification is considered anathema in today’s sex-saturated world. Some circles in psychology haven’t help matters by providing myriad excuses for abominable behaviors of every kind. When the term “choice” is bantered about as the holy grail, it is interesting that “choice” is never applied to choosing to resist giving in to our passions.

Satan never sleeps, and is especially at work in good and virtuous households with parents who do all the ‘right things.’

I kind of get the feeling that it is learned. I know that when I started feeling those kinds of desires it closely coincided with when I began to heavily use pornography and develop a habit of masturbation. But I don’t know for sure. Maybe it’s the other way around.

I consider it unlikely that the use of salacious material would provoke homosexual instincts in an otherwise heterosexual person.

A heterosexual person would be unlikely to be aroused by the same gender in order for that provocation to happen, surely?

(I’m trying to be as delicate as I can with my terminology here)

That makes sense. But what if we start off with more of a “blank slate” when we hit puberty, and some of our early experiences then make a difference?

Yes, I believe that porn and masturbation can cause a person to become homosexual and sexually promiscuous. I had the same experiences that you describe.

But why look at homosexual pornography? You must have already had same-sex attraction to look at it. I just can’t imagine wanting to look at anything like that.

I’d say most children will display a nascent undeveloped orientation that can be recognised. Many homosexual people report being aware of their sexual desires at a very early age: earlier than the critical reasoning functions that would develop allowing them to make a conscious choice in the matter. They simply develop that way.

The absolute cause is a scientific mystery. People with theological axes to grind will - as frequently evidenced on this very forum - will attempt to make absolute judgements, but the problem is, such black and white outlooks rarely correspond with reality.

I won’t say that homosexuality is decided hormonally, genetically, in-utero or during development. I simply don’t know. What I am certain of is that, for the majority of people, their sexual orientation is immutable. For those that claim otherwise, I suggest that these people that are held up as evidence of mutability are actually fundamentally bisexual and have the luxury (as it were) of being able to choose to land on the heterosexual side of the fence and still be able to live a happy life.

I agree with the Church that the sexual function is ordered towards heterosexual procreation: that’s self-evident and doesn’t need the Church to define it. But the Church has not ruled on what causes homosexuality, and where it has ruled, in the Catechism, it requires us to treat anyone with a homosexual inclination sensitively, charitably and justly and without undue discrimination.

Remember evil is vain. You give it too much credit. Or you have read too many Peter Blatty novels/movies. I’m just guessing.🤷

You’re right, I don’t know for sure what causes it either. Maybe someday we’ll get a certain answer about it.

Porn can certainly encourage a person to become promiscuous. As previously stated, I see no logical reason to suggest it would cause a person to change what they already found arousing. An addiction to what a person already was aroused by might well develop by the use of porn and thus I’d certainly agree that it is, to a greater or lesser extent, responsible for ‘hyper-sexualisation’.

In a behavioral perspective, going from a heterosexual to a homosexual would be a process called shaping. I’m sure Satan knowns all about it and uses it to shape sexual preferences at an early age.

Whoever has access to the pleasure centers of the brain involving sexual arousal can shape behavior with relative ease.

No - it is not immutable. There are plenty of people who have overcome it.

As time goes on it may become harder to change because of the brain changes.

We should also remember - anything is possible with God. If we are looking for man to solve this perhaps he is incapable without help.

I overcame porn, hyper-sexuality and homosexual tendencies by becoming religious. Yes, I agree that homosexuality is mutable.
